Welcome to the Camp Chik-a-Bawkie page! We have a combination of standard and smooth Silkies.
My husband and I keep a small hobby farm, raising Bearded Silkie chickens. Our goal is to raise Standard of Perfection Silkies with an emphasis on maintaining excellent temperaments and unique coloring. The Bearded Silkies that we are raising are wonderful little darlings. This is our first year with them and I am so excited to see the results of their hatches!

Hello, from Virginia! For my fellow silkie lovers out there...Patch of Heaven Ranch and Nursery is where I sourced many of my exceptional silkies for breeding. She is closing down her breeding program and has silkies available. They WILL go quick, so don't delay if you're interested. It's a bit of a ride from Maine but well worth the drive. Welp. We made it to Chincoteague, Virginia and it is absolutely wonderful! 🌊🌞❤ Love it here! The only downside is that we are renting and can't have chickens or geese. I miss their company so much. 😭 The seabirds here are plentiful, gorgeous and varied. I've been trying to get them to follow me home everywhere we go! This little one hung out with me for about 20 minutes today! 🤞🤣

If you need a proven black, exceptional and abundant feathering and a great body - Maybelline is your boy. He makes absolutely gorgeously feathered chicks, right out of the shell. Pic of one of his offspring below, who had just dried off from hatching. Check out those legs and feet! He is a black with green feathers. He is currently going through a molt. Maybelline is a wonderful mate to his hens - protecting, tidbitting, non-aggressive mater. He is all business, all the time. He is also exceptional and welcoming to chicks right out of the brooder. He loves to teach them how to chicken and will even let them get warm under him. He is good with younger roosters, once they learn their place, he will leave them completely alone with their own mates. He has not been with an older, established rooster. He truly is "almost" everything you want in a black silkie rooster and I hate to see him go to auction. Such a waste. We are moving to VA and can't take him with us. He is free. Please take him and make gorgeous chicks with him. Located in Standish.

2 silkie hens for sale. Will sell as pair only. They are from my original flock and are all bonded. They are all a year old and have been broody 🤦♀️ on and off all season, so keep that in mind when viewing pics. 😂 Their feathers have been through alot! 😟 They are all organically fed.
Weslie is a smooth dun chocolate. She is a great sitter. Babies should be removed once they are hatched. She loves them but is too rough with them. I let her sit and hatch but then take them away. She will then go out into the yard and adopt and care for whatever chicks she can find. 😍 Her beak is long and curved. She does very well with it. I was going to trim but she does so well with it, I was worried it would interfere with the way she eats and drinks. I recommend her new owner should leave it as is. Weslie follows me around the yard until I am done with chicken chores and sit down so she can jump into my lap. Sometimes she gets impatient and will just jump on my back. She is super feisty and will not back down from chickens or dogs who are much larger. Weslie is our OG/head hen. She's my favorite! Can you tell? :) $40
Vanilla is a white with leakage, silkie hen. She is a sweetheart and last in the pecking order. She has a gorgeous head of feathers. She has successfully brooded and raised 1 hatch and was a very good mom. I did have to trim her head feathers so she could see them. $40

Maybelline, my little silkie roo, has been sitting in this nesting box for half an hour, calling to Pumpkin (the little buff hen running around) to come and lay her egg. It's so endearing and hilarious! We made a bunch of changes this weekend to the sheds. Pumpkins favorite nesting spot is filled with chicks. We have chocolates, grays, blues and blacks for next year's breeding program. I was going to move the nesting boxes first thing this morning but then this started! Chickens! 🤷♀️🤦♀️🤣

Good morning! With these hot temps coming up, I thought it would be helpful to share some tips on keeping your chickens healthy.
Watermelon is your friend! Chickens ❤ 🍉! It's loaded with vitamins and water. Think Gatorade for chickens. Feed it to them cold, not frozen. Save the frozen Watermelon for your mojitos! Be aware it will give them very watery 💩 and that's fine. I give my flock half a watermelon during the hottest part of the day.
Do not wet down your chickens. Just like they trap body heat with their feathers, they also use them to cool off, so they need to be able to fluff up. If it's a scorcher, I will take the hose and soak down their run so their feet get cool. It helps!
Give them plenty of shade. This is pretty critical. They must have shade in hot weather.
Speaking of shade, make sure to pull your waterers out of the 🌞! Metal and plastic will heat that water right up. Chickens should have cool water to drink. Throw some ice in it if you need to cool it down a bit. Find a happy medium with the water. You don't want it frosty.
Have a fan?! Put it somewhere it can safely blow towards them! They will love you for it..after they run in fear from it!
Signs of heat stress include panting, lethargy and pale combs, wattles and face. They will pant and slow down on hot days but if they get pale it's time to intervene and bring them out of the heat till their color returns. Cool down their feet, give them some watermelon and let them relax in your cooled off house. Do not panic and throw them in front of an air conditioner! 🤣 They need water and vitamins (watermelon), rest and your smiling face! ❤

How to break a broody Silkie who is broody for the very first time, by Andrea Landry.
1. Search endlessly & fruitlessly in Southern Maine for newborn bantams.
2. Go visit your broody and tell her how freaking ridiculous she is to be sitting on Nothing, NOTHING! 🤦 Do this several times a day for 2 weeks. Point your finger at her for extra effect and dramatically sigh at her...a lot.
3. Point your plastic kiddie rake at your rooster and tell him to "Do SOMETHING about this!!!" while he chases you out of the run.
4. Defeated, go to your local Blue Seal and buy the smallest chicks you can find with the word "Blue" in their breed, cuz, ya know, Blue is EXOTIC.
5. Bring your adorable sacrificial exotic chicks home and apologize to them for what they are about to undergo.
6. Go grab your broody and move her into her brooding area while your exotic sacrificial chicks wait on the kitchen table because you are a very poor planner.
7. Your broody will make a huge racket and be very unhappy. This is fine. Everything is Just Fine.
8. Now go grab your box of sacrifices and bring them to the broody, all the while telling them that "Everything is going to be ok! You're going to meet your new Momma!"
9. Take the chicks out and put them in with the broody...who has never seen a chick before.
10. Stand back to witness the wonder of the animal kingdom in all it's glory!!!!
11. Leave the chicks with the broody for 15 minutes to instill the maximum amount of terror to break her brood. Your broody will scream, climb the walls, bounce off the ceiling, dig under the shavings and basically turn herself inside out to escape the horror of your exotic chicks, who surely want to eat her alive.
12. Remove your exotic chicks and put them in a brooder. In your house. With ALL the shavings. Where they will stay for at least the next 4 - 5 weeks cuz, guess what!? You're Mom now!
13. Leave the broody in her brooding area overnight to think about her life choices.
14. Wake up the next morning and go check on your new blue babies. Think about YOUR life choices. 🤦🤣

Well! We hatched out over 30 Silkies and a few Speckled Sussex this weekend and they are all in their new homes! Phew! That was something! To everyone that has chicks from our flocks - Thank you so much! 😁 I hope they bring you as much joy as I have found with their parents. 😍 This little silkie I kept for myself. She is only 28 hours old and look at her! The feet feathering on these hatches is outstanding. I am so proud of what we've been able to accomplish in our first season with our new Silkie flock. ❤
Hatchmaggedon has started! The next 10 days is going to be crazy around here with silkie chicks! The absolute best part of hatching/breeding is watching their new family fall instantly in love with them. 😍😍😍
