We've been seeding a single row of radishes in the middle of our carrots and beets this year and it works pretty well. These "Rover" radishes were seeded the same day as the carrots on July 28th. So the radishes are at 17 days from seeding and almost full size. They will be out before the carrots even notice. Also we're getting surprisingly good germination on carrots with just 2 drip lines. This high clay soil is really nice for holding water.

Two male flowers taped closed last night so bees can't contaminate the pollen.

A female taped last night.

Peel the petals off the male and paint the pollen on the female.

Tape up the female and wait until the squash is ready!

The Crows are tearing up our winter squash! I've never seen this before. At first we thought we had bad germination but we realized they were plucking the starts out of the ground as soon as they came up. We reseeded the missing ones and covered all the small ones they almost killed but now they're going for the remaining uncovered ones. I don't think they're eating them but I can't understand why they're doing this!

Over here on our late block, we have our dreamsicle squash breeding project, some cucumbers, luffah, bittermelon, and a little patch of corn. Trying out a new irrigation method with drippers only at the squash mounds instead of drip tape watering the whole bed.

The lettuce, spinach, pak choy, and napa cabbage are almost done. The peas carrots and kale are just coming on. Radishes and hakueri turnips were all pulled up last week and green beans, rockwell dry beans, and edamame were planted in their place. We're trying a new variety of edamame called fiskeby, which is supposed to do well in our cool northwest climate, though it doesn't feel cool these days.
