Welcome to my $7,000 hole in the ground. 😅

Our well is unfinished and producing barely 2 gallons a minute. We may still be able to make that water useful with storage, but it’s been an expensive reminder that drilling a well comes with no guarantees.

If your goal is water security, it’s worth looking at the whole property before you start drilling. How much roof do you have on your house or barn? How much water could you collect and store? Would buried rainwater tanks make sense for your setup?

Rainwater collection has its own costs and limitations, too. But “stick a straw in the ground and hope” isn’t the only route.

If you’ve built a water system on your property, what would you do differently?

It’s been 100° for weeks and I haven’t touched my fig tree once. Still eating figs off it daily. My annual garden on the other hand? Toast. Constant watering, w**ding, babysitting all summer and it still couldn’t handle the heat.

Don’t get me wrong, annual gardening has its place — but between growing it AND storing/preserving it, it’s a lot of work. I keep my big garden focused on storage crops, plus a couple raised beds for fresh stuff like tomatoes. I don’t try to grow everything anymore. My primary focus has shifted to perennial fruit, chickens, and raising sheep for meat — things that just keep producing without me babysitting them through every heat wave.

Kind of hard to ignore which one’s actually worth the effort at this point. 🌱🔥

Anyone else’s garden look like this right now? 😂

I’ll be honest—I neglected our garden some this year. Life got busy, I didn’t stay on top of it like I should have, and then this relentless heat arrived and completely finished it off.

It’s easy to share the garden when everything is green and you’re carrying in baskets full of food. But this is part of gardening too. Sometimes you stay ahead of it, sometimes life pulls your attention elsewhere, and sometimes the weather just flat-out wins.

The good thing about gardening is that one rough season doesn’t have to be the end of the story. These beds are empty right now, but I’ll be adding some fresh compost soon and getting them ready to plant for fall.

The summer won that round. We’ll see how fall goes. 😂

Did the heat take out anyone else’s garden this year?

The original Sheepshaw was built on wheels, and while it worked, it definitely had some limitations. We had to move it around by hand, and the wooden axle setup seemed to constantly give us trouble.

For Sheepshaw 2.0, I decided to simplify things and make it much more heavy-duty. We built the base on 4x6 posts that act as skids, and added eye bolts to the front for towing. Now, instead of physically moving the shelter around, we can hook it to the Polaris and drag it wherever we need it.

It’s definitely heavier than the original, but it’s also stronger, easier to move, and gives us a lot more flexibility as we rotate the sheep around the farm.

Sometimes the second version isn’t about reinventing the whole design—it’s just about fixing everything that frustrated you about the first one. 🐑

Every year, society throws away an incredible amount of food, and much of it doesn’t have to end up in a landfill.

We’ve been using the Mill to turn our food scraps into dry grounds that can be added back to the soil as a source of organic matter. It’s been one of the easiest ways we’ve found to reduce food waste around the homestead.

Most people spend all spring growing onions… then lose them because they skip this step.

After harvest, onions need time to cure before storage. We simply spread them out on a rack in the garage, keep a fan moving air across them, and let the tops dry down naturally.

Once those necks are completely dry, they’re ready for long-term storage.

This year we grew Patterson onions and couldn’t be happier with the harvest. Looking forward to enjoying these for months to come.

I used to hate on raised beds.

I thought they were expensive, overhyped, and honestly unnecessary when most people can garden in-ground with native soil and some compost.

But after years of gardening… I changed my mind.

Not because raised beds magically grow better vegetables — but because they make gardening more manageable, organized, and enjoyable for a lot of people. Especially in smaller spaces.

Less bending.
Better soil control.
Easier w**d management.
And they can look really good integrated into a kitchen garden.

At the end of the day, the “best” garden setup is the one that helps you stay consistent and keeps the joy in gardening. 🌱

If your seeds aren’t germinating…
it’s usually one of three things:

moisture
planted too deep
or too shallow

Most of the time—it’s moisture.

We had a big section of our garden we just weren’t using anymore.

And honestly… we didn’t want it going back to grass and w**ds.

So instead of just letting it go, we wanted to plant something that was actually beautiful. Something that added to the property, but was still beneficial.

So we planted a wildflower meadow.

Not just for the look—but for the pollinators, beneficial insects, and overall health of everything around it.

We planted it in late winter… and now it’s starting to fill in.

These are perennials, so this will come back year after year.

And the crazy part is—it’s really just getting started.

Super low effort, but a really solid return.

Honestly one of the better decisions we’ve made on the property.

If you’ve got unused space, this is worth thinking about.
