You know the saying "when in rome"?
Well, here's a history lesson for you folks. Rabbits were domesticated by Roman's around 200 BCE and used for meat. Here it is 2026 and us breeders still catch hell from certain people for being "cruel" or "inhumane" or whatever words needed to verify their feelings of believing that what we do is wrong. So here's a back story to my rabbitry for some clarity..
My black lab (no longer with us) was highly allergic to chicken, turkey, lamb, and pork based foods. After doing months of research, talking to numerous vets, and going through all the medications, tests, and treatments, I learned that rabbit meat is a healthy, easily processed protein, and allergy friendly source of meat for dogs. Therefore, I began raising rabbits for my dog. Withing a few weeks, her skin cleared up. I no longer had to fight lethargy, breakouts, rashes, or fungal infections due to not providing the right diet for her. After she passed, I continued to raise rabbits and make dog treats knowing that my dog wasn't the only one with these issues.
Long story short, im continuing the practice with my Lab in mind. There have been folks recently that are very obviously against what I do. Between the reactions on my posts, the comments, and the messages, its been made clear not everybody agrees with rabbitry husbandry. And thats okay! Theyre cute, fluffy, all the things. But have you ever been bit by one? For future reference, im a strong believer in the 2nd amendment, and do not take well to threats.
Basically stating, should I raise rabbits for sustenance or should I have barbecued the dog? 🤷🏽♀️ food for thought (pun intended). Pic of the sweetest little spoon dog for tax
