What else do we do at Flora’s Farm other than farming? Here’s a glimpse into our community involvement outside the gardens.
After emerging from the pandemic shutdown, we were given the opportunity to help start a new performing arts program from scratch at the Soledad Community Center with Soledad Parks and Recreation. Beginning with a small summer camp of a few children performing skits, it has now grown into a full-scale musical production with a cast of 27 and full sets/costumes/tech. “Finding Nemo, Jr.” will be swimming into Soledad May 1, 2, and 3. (Tickets available for purchase at the Farmstand on Sunday!! 🐠 )
Many things have changed from the start: bigger song numbers, more costumes, tech challenges. However, many things have stayed the same: handmade costumes, parent/actor painted sets, dedication to present the best show possible. This cast ranges from 7 year old beginners to multiple teenagers who started with the first show. We are already witnessing the spark continue through the “generations” of theatre and grow stronger with every production. Children’s theatre is a catalyst for building confidence, community, literacy, critical thinking, and respect in an exciting, colorful, and memorable 3-month experience.
In an effort to provide the best experience possible, we are holding our first fundraiser through DoubleGood Popcorn. We chose DoubleGood because their mission is to raise joy and they started from the ground up, just like our program (and the popcorn is REALLY good!!). 50% of sales will be used for the Soledad Parks and Rec Theatre program and the other 50% of sales are used by Double Good Kids Foundation to provide all-ability events for children with special needs. Sales from this fundraiser will be used to cover:
-Current production costs
Licensing Fees
Costumes
Sets/Props
Tech (microphones, speakers, lights)
Stage dressing (curtains)
-Future dreams
Stage improvements (side curtains for backstage space, rails for movable set pieces, stage extensions/choir risers)
Lighting (spotlights, more stage coverage)
