We are enjoying a few days of warm weather here on Maryland’s Eastern Shore, which means our bees are flying and need more food. Our honey bees are drinking up the sweet honey still left in their hives to get their nutrition to enter spring strong.

So this is reality for a beekeeper, but it still hits hard. We’ve been dealing with snow for the first time in several years, followed by an extremely bitter cold snap. With the temps almost up to 50F today, I went back to feed since my last visit in early January. Unfortunately, the nuc hive took the hit. Probably only died a day ago from starvation. They used all their stores and the queen had even started laying about 2 weeks ago.

I quickly looked for the queen on the three frames and found her on the first one - plucked her out to see if she might be alive (she was in the hole surrounded by her workers). Then moved her off to the side (see the back, non-fuzzy thorax). She is now in my frig awaiting spring to be used as a lure to trap any swarms, so she won’t go to waste.

Help! HRH has fainted! Just after marking this new queen with her 2025 color, she fainted. The panic is real, especially on such a hot day, and her attendants were extremely worried. I eventually convinced them to take her down in the hive, where I hope they helped revive her.

Cool fact…just like fainting goats, there are bees that faint. This particular hive in our apiary, A2, is known to breed fainting queens, which is why I am not freaking out too much.

Summer is definitely upon us, but even in a hot bee suit, the view at Tullmemore is worth it!

The girls were happy to see me because they were bursting at the seams ready to move to their new hive. Since we couldn’t find the queen, we did a blind split. Better to split than lose part of the hive to swarming. Plenty of capped and uncapped brood in each hive. One of the hives has the queen and the other should be able to create a new queen that will be ready to head out to get bred in a few weeks.

Who needs Punxsutawney Phil when you have thousands of your BFFs to let you know Spring is just around the corner? With such a bee-utiful day, the worker bees have been foraging for pollen on some of our trees that are budding. The yellow clumps on their legs are known as pollen baskets or pollen pants.

We changed up the watering holes here at Tullmemore, and the girls seem to like them a lot. Happy bees make more honey!

We are excited to kick off Tullmemore Honey! As a family farm, we take pride in producing local honey straight from our hives. Our honey bees enjoy foraging on wildflowers in fields of green and local forestland, like those of yesteryear.
