As you know, we asked Back on Track USA whether they’d be interested in helping us in our helmet safety initiative by developing a Polocrosse specific helmet, and then asked if they could somehow get it done and delivered to us before our Zambia - Zimbabwe tour.

A pretty big ask….

Back on Track basically said, “Hold my beer”, and just like that, Prototype 1 is here!! 🤩

We’ve already discussed a few tweaks and will continue refining things over the next few weeks as we put it through real-world, in game testing.

We’re incredibly grateful to Back on Track for jumping in, listening to what Polocrosse needs, and moving this forward at an incredible pace.

‼️ The Results Are In ‼️

And it’s a conversation that we can’t ignore and a massive wake up call for the Polocrosse community worldwide. Please read the post carefully for some very eye opening information....

Takeaway: New Derby Helmets tested very poorly, ranking #53 out of 54 helmets 😳

We feel privileged to be playing a small role in such a massive initiative that will ultimately improve our sport and the safety around it.

A big thank you goes to SC Polocrosse Equipment for offering 5 brand new New Derby helmets at cost, and to APA president and Virginia Tech alumn, Virginia Carpenter Covert for personally sponsoring the purchase. This was an integral first step in the process, so thank you.

While we’re not telling you what to do, we are definitely here to share one of Back on Tracks slogans, “You only have one head, use it and protect it!”

Player safety remains one of the APA Board's highest priorities. Following the tragic loss of Alex Harvey, the APA's Helmet Safety Subcommittee has been working hard to evaluate the latest helmet technology and provide members with objective, independent information to help them make informed safety decisions.

𝗩𝗜𝗥𝗚𝗜𝗡𝗜𝗔 𝗧𝗘𝗖𝗛 𝗛𝗘𝗟𝗠𝗘𝗧 𝗧𝗘𝗦𝗧𝗜𝗡𝗚
As part of this effort, the APA partnered with the Virginia Tech Helmet Lab to independently test the New Derby helmet using its internationally recognized equestrian helmet rating system.

Unlike traditional certifications that simply verify minimum safety standards, Virginia Tech measures how well helmets reduce concussion risk. Helmets receive both a STAR Score (lower is better) and a 0–5 Star Rating.

The Virginia Tech test results indicate that, among the helmets evaluated, the New Derby provided one of the lowest levels of predicted concussion protection.

While every player must make their own equipment decisions, we believe providing objective, third-party testing allows members to make more informed choices.

This independent testing would not have been possible without the generosity of two members of our polocrosse community.

Sara Cifelli, owner of SC Polocrosse, generously provided the five New Derby helmets needed for Virginia Tech’s testing at cost, and APA President Virginia Carpenter Covert personally covered the cost of the helmets.

𝗣𝗥𝗢𝗚𝗥𝗘𝗦𝗦 𝗪𝗜𝗧𝗛 𝗕𝗔𝗖𝗞 𝗢𝗡 𝗧𝗥𝗔𝗖𝗞 (𝗕𝗢𝗧) 𝗛𝗘𝗟𝗠𝗘𝗧 𝗢𝗣𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡𝗦
One of the most encouraging developments has been our partnership with Back on Track.

They are currently working on producing a white Trauma Void helmet prototype specifically for polocrosse. The prototype will soon be tested by APA member, Physician Assistant, and upper-level player Rahul Desai, who will provide feedback and recommendations on adapting the helmet to the unique demands of our sport.

If development continues as planned, we're hopeful that white Back on Track Trauma Void helmets will be available later this year.

We'll continue providing updates as the Back on Track Trauma Void helmet progresses through field testing and development. As promised, here’s an update on our Polocrosse helmet initiative.

From the very beginning, Back on Track USA and Back on Track International have been incredible to work with, and we’re excited to announce that the first steps in developing a prototype Polocrosse helmet are now underway! 🙌

In addition, background preliminary work is happening to explore the possibility of these helmets meeting safety standards beyond ASTM and SEI. There’s still plenty to learn and discuss, but we look forward to sharing more details as the project progresses.

To highlight Back on Track’s commitment to this initiative, we’d like to share a couple of comments from our recent conversations:

“We’d like to take the lead on developing a safer helmet.”
“We feel compelled to help find a better solution for Polocrosse helmet safety.”

Those statements and more speak volumes about BOT’s dedication to player safety and the future of our sport.

There’s not much more to say other than thank you to BOT for listening, for believing in the importance of this initiative, and for immediately asking how they could help make it a reality.

We also want to thank everyone for their patience and support as this project moves forward. Improving player safety is a journey, and this is one important step toward making our sport even better.

🚨 Helmet Safety Update from the APA Board 🚨

We are excited to share that Back on Track, the high-performance equestrian wellness and protective gear company, is now working to partner with the APA to help elevate rider safety in our sport.

Back on Track's CEO, James Ruder, has been working directly with APA member, International Liaison, and senior player Rahul Desai to develop a polocrosse-specific helmet prototype. Their Trauma Void helmet line is already engineered for high-intensity contact sports and features the MIPS® Safety System, a low-friction layer that reduces dangerous rotational forces during angled impacts, offering meaningfully better brain protection than standard helmets.

We are working together to ensure any solution meets ASTM F1163 and SEI certification standards - the gold standard in American equestrian safety - and also includes MIPS technology, all while remaining affordable for families outfitting multiple players.

This is early in the process, but we are encouraged by Back on Track's genuine commitment to our community. We will continue to share updates as this work progresses.
