John “Gun Dog” Speagle
The Freedom Beverage Family lost a dear friend on Wednesday October 7, 2026. John “Gun Dog” Speagle was loyal and trusted member of our family for many years. Always ready to share a story or two (or three!), John never met a stranger and would talk to anyone. He would arrive every day with a tall tale to tell, and usually with the pictures to prove it! He was certainly happiest while hunting and spending time outdoors with his sweet dogs, Junebug and Belle. He never failed to share his hunting bounty with his friends, and during season we always knew there would be fresh venison from Gunny. In the summer he always had fresh strawberries and cantaloupes to pass out as well. He loved good food and good w**e, but was equally happy with Reese’s cups and a great cheeseburger. Our best-selling Gun Dog Malbec rightly bears his name as he was a cornerstone of our working family. He was a father, grandfather, dog-lover, beloved friend, trusted confidant, loyal employee, and a true outdoorsman. He will be very deeply missed by those who loved him, and remembered fondly by those at Freedom with whom he spent so many special years. As we begin to navigate this new season without our friend, we also want to share that John was an organ donor. In his final moments he was able to give the gift of survival to others, which is a truly selfless act. We find comfort knowing that the love he showed us will carry on in a new generation through these worthy recipients. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in John’s memory to the NC Wildlife Foundation.
