Old vs new growth 2x4

That old board has about 60 growth rings… the new one? Around 10-20.

More rings = tighter grain = denser, stronger wood that burns slower and holds up better to bugs.

Today’s lumber is grown fast for production. Back then, it came from natural forests… and there aren’t many of those left.

Same 2x4… 100 years apart

Forest Service, USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service and the State of Georgia are strengthening their commitment to share stewardship across forested lands in Georgia.
