If you have ever wanted to try rotational grazing on your farm, now is the time to get the infrastructure in place to be grazing well in spring. We used Greene Grazing Management LLC to get up and running. We highly recommend Jordan! Feel free to reach out to us with any questions or give Jordan a call to get on his schedule.

With the warm season coming to a close it’s always a great time to reflect on accomplishments of the summer. This was a grazers dream of a summer and my clients took full advantage of it! Lots a grass and sometimes too much grass, which is a great problem to have… looking forward to the cool season coming in and the challenges it will bring!

Triple Nickel Farms now has a “flerd” (goat/sheep flock+cow herd=flerd) the reason to implement multi-species grazing onto an operation comes down to forage utilization. When running one species of grazing animals you will have some plants that won’t be eaten because the animals don’t prefer them or they can’t eat them. By introducing sheep and goats into a cattle herd you get use of a lot of the forage species that cattle don’t like/want/can’t have! A good way to think about this is with grazing cattle only, they are eating 50% of what is growing vs cattle/sheep/goats will use closer to 75% to 80% of available growth!

Two pictures 34 days apart. In the beginning of June we were grazing off the remnants of our cool season forages and laying down a good mat of mature plants to feed the soil. Now here we are 34 days in the future looking at a great stand of warm season forages showing out. We are still looking for a more diverse stand of plants but with this being the first year that any high density grazing has happened on River Raised Farm we will take what we can get! Keep in mind that these pastures are receiving no inputs of fertilizer/lime etc, constant movement of the animals and planned grazing is what achieves results. Allowing your pastures the correct amount of time to heal and recover is vital to grazing success. This pasture will still be growing and recovering for another 15 or so days before it will have another animal impact.

A good visual of what AMP grazing is all about. This helps show the daily rotation we have implemented on River Raised Farm. Focusing on laying down the mature cool season forages to help make way for the summer grasses. Putting this mat of cool seasons down not only armors the soil, it will feed the microbes within the soil adding to soil organic matter and higher water infiltration rates. With the rotation we have going right now the next grazing event here will be about 60 days from now. The benifits of high density grazing are always awesome to see and I can’t wait to see what will be in store for the summer months.

Seeing some really encouraging progress with the goat clear cut project. This area was full of saplings, bushes and briars. The goats have helped open up the latent seed bank (dormant seeds in the soil) giving different forage species the opportunity to grow and not be crowded out by the tougher woody plants. Very happy to show some hard work paying off!! If you have any areas you would like to see goats transition into pasture please reach out!

Super appreciative for the opportunity to help another grazier get off the ground and rolling with their amp grazing infrastructure install!! They have now gone from a continuous grazing operation to an adaptive multi paddock system giving their forages time to rest and recover creating healthier soils and happier animals!!

Cowboy Christmas (spring grazing) is upon us!!
Got some satisfied customers grazing on a great mix of cool season forages. Starting out 70 animal units (unit=1000lbs) on about 1.4 acres per day hoping the weather permits us to graze a little tighter going forward on this mix. Best time of year!
