Guess what is ripening at Brookhaven Mill Farm?

Pawpaws!

The back 13 acres of the farm has an old pawpaw patch that has been quietly producing pawpaws over the years--unseen and unknown until a deer hunter spotted them last fall and told the farm's owner of his discovery: a secret oasis of hundreds of pawpaw plants hidden away in the woods.

This shy and almost unknown fruit, indigenous to this area of North Carolina, won't be found in mainstream grocery stores due to their short shelf life. But even as an uncommon food to most people, pawpaws have been around for centuries and has its own fan club following of food lovers who appreciate this hard-to-find and delicious fruit described as a cross between a mango and a banana.

Two of the farm's regulars offered to scout in these woods looking for the alleged oasis.

Armed with bucket, machete, long sleeves, gloves and boots, these seasoned hikers cut a path towards the creek and found their treasure!

They reported back that many trees had fruit but were not quite ripe, and were able to get some of the ripe ones, shown below.

The back 13 acres are overgrown, dense and not for the faint of heart, but in September we will open this area of the farm for die-hard pawpaw lovers looking for an adventure for this elusive, exotic fruit that has such a short harvest season.

Less than 3 weeks old baby squirrels

08/08/2026

UPDATE: 2 passed from dehydration and the third is eating, has filled out and wants to live.
*********
Rescued 3 tiny baby squirrels from the chicken coop today. Looks like they fell out of their nest when that storm came through Thursday late aft. The 3 are alive and hungry and with help of Faith Rock Pingel was able to get some milk in their stomachs. Eyes have not opened yet but are trying to which means they are almost 3-4 weeks old.

If they survive and thrive, I am excited to be raising a pet squirrel again!

We'd like to recognize one of our constant supporters of the Farm for their recent donation of a ginormous cage!
We were quickly needing a larger space for our 12 growing chicks and Faith Rock Pingel offered this up!

Faith has been a staunch supporter and good customer at the Farm. She shops Charlie's Farm Store weekly and even has 2 raised beds in our Community Garden that she tends often. Many of you may even recognize her behind the counter at the Farm store where she has helped out, or during kids birthday parties when she oversees the small animal exhibit.

Our Farm started 7 years ago on the hopes the community would visit and support, and it is folks like Faith who continue to make this Farm thrive.
