Busy day on the farm. The rest of the pregnant ladies due this Fall moved into the maternity pasture and Leo came with them. They are after all his cows. He always wants to help with calving but Val usually won’t allow it. We negotiated a truce and he joined the neonatal team. Cecelia is next up and has been restless this evening so #2 appears to be on the way.

Hope won the race for first calf again this year. This handsome young man is by WMSF Chip. Hope had the good sense to get him on the ground, up, and eating before the weather deteriorates this evening. Hope is an excellent mother. Glenn Land Ms Hope x WMSF Chip

We had to interrupt our usual morning routine to check the Longwools and deworm as needed. There is a tropical storm lurking in the extended neighborhood. If there is a named storm out there somewhere, these ladies will decide to have a parasite bloom. I have learned to be preemptive. They were not happy with the disruption to their schedule and not even alfalfa pellets could stop the cold shoulders and accusing looks.

Hope is on deck and Val has checked in for duty.

Dixie is scouting out the hurricane damaged sheep shelter as a possible birthing location. There is a beautiful new cow size shelter in the field but she thinks this old shelter might be better. The barometer is bouncing around this weekend and she is considering releasing the hostage. She is bred to Belle Fourche Pippin.

Pippin has always been a very quiet bull. He spent years bellowing in a whisper. You could hear him if you were nearby but certainly not across the pasture. In recent years he has found his voice and really sings.

About a year ago we introduced several cows to WMSF Chip. After breeding they left to join new or expanding Dexter herds. All these cows have now successfully delivered healthy calves for their new farms. Good job Chip! An experienced bred cow is a great way for newer Dexter herds to expand or bring in some genetic diversity.
