Our inspiration for our brewery is the German concept of Gemütlichkeit. While there isn't a direct English translation, it loosely (pun intended) translates as a state of warmth, friendliness and good cheer. Our beers, culture, and service will hopefully enable you to experience Gemütlichkeit! So what is a “loose reed?” It’s actually a very obscure and small part of a textile loom. A reed, in the
textile sense, is a comb-like piece of a loom that holds one direction of the threads in alignment while the loom weaves the fabric. A loose reed is just a particular type of reed that inventors created during the Industrial Revolution. It was a key part of automating the weaving process and expanding the textile industry worldwide, which brings us to Greenville. The textile industry put Greenville County on the map and helped to make it the wonderful place it is today. “Loose reed” gives the brewery a connection to that history. While these reeds are now made of stainless steel, traditionally, they were surprisingly made out of reeds! And the Reedy River flows through Greenville County! The Reedy River was also essential to the early development of the textile industry in Greenville County. Beyond these local historical and geographical influences, Loose Reed will have an easy-going, loose atmosphere, reminiscent of German biergartens.
