I've read that Barn Swallows are becoming fewer each year, and wonder how we can actually know that! Well, it isn't happening here. There is quite a few flying about and I'm so happy. They're happy because they build their nests under the eaves of the shed!

Remember to plant sunflowers every 10 days. If you have the space, it's fun to plant different heights.

Thankfully the weather is better. Birds have their days filled with caring for their babies. These are baby cardinals waiting to be fed and another reason why you should leave water for birds.

Even if you don't use feeders, please leave water for birds.

Zinnias will love this weather but will need watering now and then.

Planting zinnias too close together will give you powdery mildew. Not enough air circulating between plants will be your problem. Also, keep then weed-free because insects love weeds and disfigure your flowers.

GARDENING TIPS

WATERING DURING DRY WEATHER
When the weather isn’t in our favor and it appears that
we’re in for a dry stretch, it’s time to water your garden to
save whatever is still looking like water will help. _ . _ . _ . _ . _ . _ . _ . _ .
Flowers, especially perennials, need a soaking in order to
keep their roots viable and strong enough to support the
life of the plants until we do get significant rain. Without
enough water as we go into fall and winter, they could win-
ter kill, and that means they are gone.
Annuals can still do well if you water them.
How does your vegetable garden look? Let’s say your plants
are still green and not wilted. That’s the sign to continue
summer watering. However, any plants that have powdery
mildew or rust spots must be removed from the garden. This
shoud be done very carefully. Pull them out and put them in
a plastic bag for garbage collection. Never add them to your
compost.
Trees and shrubs should be watered regularly.
The best time to water is in the evening as the sun goes
down. In the cooler night air, the water will sink into the soil,
and the roots will get what they need. Avoid watering in the
morning. The warmth of the sun will cause the water to
evaporate before it has a chance to pe*****te the soil. _ . _ . _ . _ . _ . _ . _ . _ .
It’s time to start watering to help all that you’ve nurtured for
so long. It is sad as well as disappointing to see our gardens
as they are. All of what has happened has been caused by
Mother Nature, and we have to deal with what she gives us.
Never give up, gardeners! And if worse comes to worst,
there’s always next year! _ . _ . _ . _ . _ . _ . _ . _ .
