Feeders gain vs fats

Futures spreads gained $8/cwt this week alone

Feeder cattle prices are on fire and that has widened the spread in both cash and futures markets this week. Fueled by record fed cattle closeouts, no feeder supply from Mexico, cheap feed costs, and FOMO on the next turn are major inputs. As feeder cattle prices soar, so have purchase breakevens – but with a growing amount of equity and a fed market that continues to reward risk taking, there’s no end in sight as buyers scramble to outbid everyone else.
