The Schohr Family has over 150 years of farming tradition in California. In 2011, the family was proud to be inducted into the California Agricultural Heritage Club. The Schohr family farming and ranching heritage originated in Yolo County, beginning in 1861. In 1910, the operation expanded to southwestern Butte County and today, continues to farm the property J. Browning purchased over a century
ago. Since that time, the family business has operated as a rice and cattle ranch. Historically, the Schohr Ranch raised commercial Herefords, black baldies, Shorthorn and Angus cattle. Other crops such as wheat, oats, corn, hay, safflower, wild rice, sheep, hogs and sorghum have been grown. In 1911, the operation planted its first acres of rice, and today continues to grow thousands of acres of premium grade rice that is sold to consumers both domestically, and internationally. The Schohr Ranch also maintains a herd of registered Hereford cattle and markets bulls to commercial cattlemen and female offspring to livestock operations throughout the Western United States. In addition, the 6th generation has recently expanded to include a registered Angus herd and started making olive oil from trees that date back to the Schohr family’s original settlement of the ranch in Gridley. Today, Schohr family activities in California Agriculture span diverse interests beyond production agriculture to include custom farming, trucking, and wetland habitat management. Surviving generational transfers, volatile markets, and unfavorable public policy, the operation remains steadfast and is proud to continue to a family legacy of environmentally and economically sustainable farming in California. The Schohr Family sees a bright future as the 6th generation takes an active role in North state community organizations, policy, scientific research and public outreach, creating a favorable family and business climate for the next 150 years.
