With much sadness in our hearts, our herd has lost their patriarch figure, 37 year old Smokey overnight, a staff member’s horse. Smokey went over rainbow bridge peacefully, with seemingly little to no pain which is all we could hope for. He did not thrash in his stall, just seemingly laid down, stretched out a bit and left us. To have a horse at 37 years old leave peacefully, is all we can ask, though it breaks our hearts to lose him. Last night he was trotting around, looking good. He was munching on his hay, though he had this last week gotten finicky about not wanting to eat all his soaked grain, which he has done sporadically over the years before for a few days at a time, then would start eating it all again. The rest of the herd will miss him, especially his turnout buddy and neighbor May and his other stall neighbor Lexi. He also seemed to developed a bond recently with Henry (the goat) who would hang out with him outside on his walks. Smokey could be finicky and a bit grumpy sometimes, but was great with the younger horses and with kids in EAL/EAP sessions and letting young people lead him in and out for turnout. He has moved on to never ending green pastures to join his friends he knew over his long horse life, that went before him.
The Rainbow Bridge For Horses
Author Unknown
By the edge of a woods, at the foot of a hill,
is a lush, green meadow where time stands still.
Where the friends of man and woman do run,
when their time on earth is over and done.
For here, between this world and the next,
is a place where beloved creatures find rest.
On this golden land, they wait and they play,
til The Rainbow Bridge they cross over one day.
No more do they suffer, in pain or in sadness,
for here they are whole, their lives filled with gladness.
Their limbs are restored, their health renewed.
Their bodies have healed with strength imbued.
They trot through the grass without even a care,
til one day they whinny and sniff at the air.
All ears prick forward, eyes sharp and alert.
Then all of a sudden, one breaks from the herd.
For just at that second, there's no room for remorse.
As they see each other...one person...one horse.
So they run to each other, these friends from long past
The time of their parting is over at last.
The sadness they felt while they were apart
has turned to joy once more in each heart.
They nuzzle with a love that will last forever.
And then, side-by-side, they cross over...together.
