We have a duck named Rover. Rover thinks she is a puppy. For about a month now, Rover has lived in the enclosed puppy pen. She eats with the pups, bathes in their water bowl, has a nest under their house and plays with them. She could easily fly over the fence or walk through the gate when it is open. She has a pond and 14 other duck friends and a duck palace. But no. She is a puppy.

March 7. Spring. What a beautiful spring morning! These mornings are what it is all about. Did my chores and enjoyed watching the animals. Checked on the pregnant goats and realized I spend an inordinate amount of time looking at animal bottoms. Is it a male? Check the bottom. Does it have the runs? Check the bottom. Has it been castrated yet? Check the bottom. Is it in heat? Yep, check the bottom. Is it pregnant? Supposedly you can tell if you....wait for it.....check the bottom. I will spare you the picture today.

March 6. Chickens. One animal I totally vetoed having on our place was chickens. I am afraid of chickens. All chickens. Roosters and chicklets too. I am afraid of birds. Chickens are birds. Chickens have pointy beaks and terrifying feet. Have you seen the movie "The Birds"? Seriously. It was agreed, no chickens. So now we have 20+ chickens. I was conned into it with big eyes and a 4-H project and the promise I wouldn't have to do anything with them and they would stay in the fenced area. They don't. They fly. So now we have chickens. Chickens in the chicken pen. Chickens in the yard. Chickens on the drive, on my truck, in the garage, in the side by side. Chickens on my porch. Even chickens in the dining room waiting to be big chickens that will refuse to be in the chicken pen. We have a rooster named Chanticleer, which led to chickens hatching in an incubator in the kitchen. So much for the power of the veto.

March 5. I have a car air freshener that reads "I still remember the days I prayed for the things I have now". Some days I think I should change it to 'be careful what you pray for, you just might get it'. Most of the time though, I use it to remind me just how blessed we are. I love this country life although if you told me a few years ago that at 65 I would be feeding and watering 70+ animals early every morning, I'm not sure blessed would be the word that came to mind.
