Birch Farm

Birch Farm A family farm in Guthrie, OK handed down since 1895. Chris and Kary Jarred will be the 5th generation to live on this land. We have named our new home Birch Farm, to honor the memory of the great-great grandparents who originally bought this land.

Quixote singing the song of his people. He does this almost every time I pull up. Today I had been there a while, and went into the house. You can see the moment he notices (in the middle of calling for me) that I was standing right there. Love my goofy donkeys!

Emma and I found this guy crawling in the grass at the farm this evening. We relocated him to the garden, where there is less chance of being stepped on, and hopefully he’ll grow up to become a Luna moth!

So we went to a cattle auction Saturday and brought home 5 new cows. They’re still getting settled in and introducing themselves to the other cows, but here are:
Harriet, Flo, Bertha, Agnes, and Winnie

We are pretty sure that all but Winnie are pregnant, so next year we will have quite the herd!!

The girls got together and wrote a personal ad, so Cowboy is coming to stay on the farm for a while. He said the ad read “close-knit girl group seeks gentleman friend for long walks in the field, tender glances over the water trough, and maybe more”. He’s spent the last hour approaching the ladies one by one and saying “how you doin’” over and over.

This was found in the concrete around the cellar door at the farmhouse several weeks ago. Soon it’ll be covered up by new concrete for the back porch, but I wanted to make sure we had good pictures before it’s hidden again. She would have been 14 years old when she scratched her name into the fresh concrete of the then-brand-new house. Even though this won’t always be visible, it’ll always be a part of the house.

Moved cows and donkeys from one pasture to a different one today, which involves going out a gate they’ve never used, crossing the driveway, then going through a new gate. Lots of new grass. Quixote and Dominic? No sweat. Mathilda and Stella? RIGHT BEHIND YOU. Marge and the boys? Invisible barrier stopping anybody from stepping one foot through the Gates of Doom. 45 minutes of conversation later, everyone made the trip safely. One of the steers only went through due to Clark’s fine cattle work. She is no cutting horse, but makes a fine cattle dog.

Kiss the Ground Film | Official Website

I’ve spent years watching documentaries, watching YouTube videos, reading books and reading articles on regenerative agriculture. Turns out, I’m physically incapable of saying that word correctly, but I’m really trying hard to learn how to put the ideas into practice. I’m learning that some people are supportive of the ideas, and some are not, and that’s fine. I think everyone should watch this documentary on Netflix, though. Has all of the heavy hitters from the movement, from Ray Archuleta and Allan Savory to Gabe Brown and John Liu. It’s a really great look at what can be done to make a difference. And it’s narrated by Woody Harrelson and has some great Jason Mraz music.

Narrated and featuring Woody Harrelson, Kiss the Ground is an inspiring and groundbreaking film that reveals the first viable solution to our climate crisis.

Another mouth to feed.

As a YouTube farmer, I’m learning new things almost every day. Lessons from ice storm #1? Gotta get new muck boots and some overall coveralls (thanks Aunt Dorothy!). Need to stay warm and dry. I also need to set up the feeding troughs in better places. I can’t drag square bales through dairy barns and past cows. We have the right equipment (which I forgot. Thanks Jerry!), it’s just not in the right places. Lastly, we have to build more shelter. It’s going to get colder, even though it probably can’t get wetter (sorry Quixote!!!).
