We took 90 day weights on 106 kids this afternoon. First time using a five year old as the scale man and recorder, but he did a great job! We’ll run weaning index calculations this evening and see how everyone stacks up.

We finally wrapped up our new livestock waterer project over the long weekend, by building a removable panel in the fence, that will allow us to still take the top of the waterer off, if necessary. We’ll add some large gravel around the concrete to help wear down hooves.

We’d like to thank the Thurber family for starting their meat goat operation with 16 of our 8 month old doelings. We enjoyed the visit and think you and your kiddos picked some nice goats.

Before and After. We’ve got an area down by the barn that’s not inside the pasture fence, but it’s not yard either. I’ve let it grow up with sumac and blackberries for 3 or 4 years instead of brush hogging it, and I decided to put up some electric netting and let the doe herd have it for a few days. They smoked it!

We took our bucklings to market this week. First time we couldn’t fit them all in the trailer and had to put a few in cage. Instead of taking them right at weaning this year, we kept them another 40 days to keep them growing. We got some good gains, but the market started slipping, so I don’t think we really did any better than had we sold the first of May.

Yesterday we gathered everybody up to get 90 day weights on all the kids. Some were great. Some not. The data will help us make better decisions on doe retention, as well as which breeding pairings perform better. We also moved our yearling does to a new pasture and are pleased with how several of them are growing out.

We finished up our 2024 kidding season last week, exactly 21 days after it started. We had 123 kids born to 64 does. We’re grateful for some milder weather now, compared to how it started out.

We had a cool milestone this kidding season. We started our breed-up program 7 years ago, crossing purebred Kiko bucks over commercial does. Each year we’ve retained many of our own percentage doelings (50%, 75%, 88%) for future breeding stock. This year we had our first purebred kids born out of a homegrown 88% doe, crossed with a 100% buck. These twins are both bucklings, and it’s statistically unlikely they’ll serve any different purpose than our commercial bucklings and won’t be registered, but it’s fun to see something come to fruition that has taken several years to reach that point.

New hay feeder completed. I made a similar one last year, borrowing a lot of the design from Jd Gibson, and liked how we got along with it. I tweaked a few things on this one and used more box tubing, so that I had to saddle less pipe. We’ve tried lots of different hay feeders, and finding the right balance between reducing waste, yet keeping hay accessible without frequent effort from us, is always a challenge.
