I just got through tilling and raking smooth my pea beds. I like to grow my southern peas in the fall. What’s your favorite variety of southern peas?. Pink Eye Purple Hull seems to be the most popular and we really like them. It’s easy to grow and it’s easy to tell when they are already to harvest because the hulls turn purple-ish. I’m growing a new pea ,for us , called Sapelo Island Red Peas. I’ve never grown them before and we are looking forward to harvest time. In addition We are planting Pinkeye Purple Hull, Sapelo Red Peas, Lady Finger, and Zipper Peas . Southern peas are our favorite crop that we grow! We ususally put back about 15 to 20 quarts. I like a meal of peas and cornbread only. You can live on that!

I’m planting corn, okra, southern peas, cucumbers, and pole beans this week. I probably won’t do another market until the new crops mature in September. Stay cool and look here for updates. Have a fun summer!
