Today was shearing day for the angoras! I did a lot of research into which type of angora bunny I wanted and settled on the German Angora. Mitsy and Rocky are both so sweet and are patient for shearing. Unlike other angora breeds they don’t tend to molt their coats so need to be shaved/scissor trimmed every 3 months. Their fiber is incredibly soft and grows so fast. I only keep the best fiber for spinning and any places that tend to catch their hay and may have some tangles like the belly, under the chin, and the bottom side I put in my garden for mulch.

Even on extremely busy weeks I try to take time on Sunday’s to sit and work on some project even if I only have 30mins. Today’s project is working on a sweater from my hand spun yarn. About 1/4 of the way done.

In 2009 I had my first litter of rabbits. In 2010 I would start raising rabbits for what would become CNR Farms. I have been raising rabbits ever since with a small pause while I was in college. I had many of my original rabbits until they passed on old age. Over the last 6 months I have come to the realization that I can’t do it all and do it all well. I’ve had to sit down and evaluate the different aspects of our farm and decide what I was most passionate about and what I felt I could let go. Rabbits were one thing I decided to let go. Yesterday I sold my last male Holland Lop and my season of breeding rabbits has come to a close. I kept Claire my first Holland Lop the one who got me back into breeding after my pause and my 2 German Angoras because I do shear them for their fiber. I know I will always have a couple rabbits as pets because I love having them but for now I feel like this was the right thing to do.

This spin came out better than I could have expected! More of this combo coming as I make enough to crochet a sweater!
The white fiber is polwarth and stellina mix. My first time spinning polwarth and it was a great spin. The colored fiber is a merino and silk blend which is incredibly soft. Also my first time spinning a silk blend.

It’s National Ag Day! I absolutely love getting to do events like this! Had a blast at Rincon Elementary teaching the kids about fiber animals and the yarn spinning process. Thank you to the Bobcat Aggies for the invite. What a better way to spend the day than getting to share my passion for spinning yarn and the fiber animals that create that yarn. As a bonus I almost filled an entire bobbin of yarn today. 💗

Edit: All current cows have sold out but get on our list for the next ones that will be ready.

Get your Freezers stocked for the all those Fall cookouts!

We will have more available in a couple months. You can go ahead and get your name on a list for future cows.

We do half and whole cows. What does this mean? We sell by hanging weight. This is how much the cow weighs once it is butchered and about to be hung in the freezer. Our cows hanging weight can be anywhere from 500-800lbs.

Right now we are selling for $6/lb and that includes the processing fee. The cost for a whole cow can be anywhere from $3600 to $4800, roughly. This might sound kind of expensive but just think about this.
Where can you go by a farm-raised Ribeye, Filet, or T-Bone for $5.50/lb. Even ground beef has become super expensive.
If a half or a whole cow is too much for you, get your family or friends to go in with you. We have several families that go in together every 6 months and buy half a cow. It’s the way to go.

Our cows are out on pasture their whole life eating grass, eating hay, and also being supplemented with grain to get them in optimal condition. We don’t use any antibiotics or steroids. I have to say I have a hard time finding better tasting beef than fresh from a local farm.

Here’s a link to read more about how much meat actually comes off the cow....https://extension.sdstate.edu/how-much-meat-can-you-expect-fed-steer?fbclid=IwAR3LxxPFF63oOvV72UXdYWUjk7aUqNlQOjtizKUkoSCCmcIWlX1JuUiC-qU_aem_AYAZj0IxO6rDdak5zWZm9UOhiDp5oIvd8AYNZFe9DcN44WOuFxYSwV5V0eH2d22VGsg

The yield of edible meat from a beef carcass often comes as a bit of a surprise, even to those that have had their own meat processed for years. A previous article covered dressing percent—the percent of the live animal weight that becomes carcass weight, which for fed beef is usually around 62-64...
