What is Reverse Osmosis

Reverse osmosis (RO) is a water purification technology that employs the use of semi-permeable membrane to purify water. Reverse osmosis involves passing water through a semipermeable membrane which is small enough to allow water molecules to pass through as well as getting rid of larger molecules.

Reverse osmosis involves the use of an applied pressure to overcome osmotic pressure. This process can get rid of numerous types of ions and molecules from water such as bacteria. Reverse osmosis is used in both industrial and residential production of water. During the production, the solute is usually retained on the pressurized side of the membrane while the pure solvent is on the other side of the membrane.
