This project has been overdue for about 6 months 🫣 Our freeze dryer broke and somehow fixing it just kept getting pushed down the list. These cooler mornings finally gave us the motivation to tackle it. We use it to preserve so much of our food, so we’re definitely ready to have it back up and running. And the boys got to learn a little alongside Dad in the process.

I’ve been gardening for almost 7 years now and apparently I’m still the person who plants carrot seeds with a ruler 😂

I really thought by now we’d have a huge garden, grow most of our own food and maybe even have enough to sell some from the farm. Turns out 7 people eat A LOT of food. Our garden hasn’t grown nearly as much as I thought it would over the years, but we keep working at it and figuring out what works for us. And sometimes the simplest ways still work just fine.

One of the first things we do when new chicks arrive is gently dip the tip of each beak into the water.

It helps show them where their water is and encourages them to take that first drink after the trip home.

Maybe someone else needs this reminder too: life can be hard and still be really, really good.

You can be disappointed in some things and grateful for others. You can have things you’re working through and still enjoy the day you’re in. You don’t have to wait until everything is perfect to notice what’s good.

Today’s good was a rainbow over the pasture.

We may only be getting 3–4 eggs a day right now, but they sure are the deepest golden orange color.Starting over is hard...

FARM UPDATE: Unfortunately, we had some predator trouble while we were away and lost part of our flock. Our remaining girls are pretty stressed, and egg production has dropped significantly. We do not have any eggs available for sale right now, but we’ll post an update when that changes. Thank you for understanding!

The critters definitely kept me humble, but they didn’t beat me. These were the last carrots from the garden, and I’m pretty proud of them.

Long, straight, sweet carrots… in August… in Texas. I’ll take that.

We learned a lot this season, especially about using shade to help crops through the heat. Now it’s time to tackle the real problem: everything that wants to eat the garden before we do. 😂

Things I’m learning lately: nothing is ever exactly the same as it was before.

We’ve grown carrots successfully every year, but this year something else decided they were worth waiting for too. Every day I’d make it out to the garden, and every day a few more carrots would be gone.

They’re not quite ready, but it’s either pull them now or let our mystery snacker finish off the whole row.

So today we harvested tiny carrots and called it a win.

We know it’s been a little quiet around here lately, but farm life has been full!

We recently wrapped up one of our biggest chores of the year: processing our meat chickens. It was three long days of processing, bagging, and getting everything tucked away in the freezer. Thankfully, the weather was much kinder to us than it could have been this time of year.

As wild as it feels to say, we are already sold out.

We are so grateful for every customer who trusts us to feed their family. Each year, we feel the pull to grow a little more, raise a little more, and serve more families in our community.

A big thank you to MikeJoy for coming out and helping us get it all done. We truly could not have done it without the extra hands.

Thank you all for supporting our farm and allowing us to do this work. It truly means so much to us.
