When you’re sitting on the edge of the potato patch, taking stock of this years volunteers and replanning the garden layout around them, spot some hawks, and have to pivot to chicken guard duty. Now it’s dirt caked hands and front porch chairs ❤️

It’s about that time 🥰

We choose not to use supplemental lighting to encourage our hens to lay more often through the winter, instead preferring to allow them their natural rest. As a result, our egg availability is much lower through the winter.

But spring is here 🌸 and the ladies of the house are blessing us with more abundance than we need!

Keep an eye out for egg availability beginning in mid-April!

Quick jaunt in the garden tonight, and I found all sorts of treasures—the happiest of which was our first two tomatoes beginning to blush 🥰. Here, I pick my tomatoes at the first sign of reddening and allow them to ripen on the counter, otherwise I’ll lose them all to rabbits, deer, stray cats and the worst garden predator of all—domestic chickens!

I know I’ve said this before but that’s really the last of the summer carrots. Those chunky little Parisienne’s are so adorable. That’ll also be the last of the the zebra striped Dragon tongue beans until September but the pole beans are just getting started. Most exciting—look at those white sugar beets!

What are you harvesting right now?

8 Ball Zucchini-a yearly staple
Purple majesty and Red Pontiac potatoes (41 pounds for the year!)
The last of the summer carrots are Longue Rogue Sang, one of our faves!
Chamomile
Onions
Dragon tongue, kentucky wonder, and Blauhilde Beans
A few strawberries and herbs.

The sunflowers and tomatoes are just taunting me, we’re SO CLOSE 🥰

Sat on the back porch and watched a mixed flock peck the ground a bit tonight.

I lost count of how many times Adam or I said “this is really nice”.

They aren’t quite BFF’s, but the ducks, the “big chickens” and the “baby chickens” coexist peacefully so far, and that’s just…really nice ❤️
