Let your daughters grow up to be horse girls.

Let her room be chaos and her jods frayed at the seams. Let her brushes be clean, her tack well-oiled, and her pony shine. Let her be first out to the yard at dawn and last in when the feeds are done at night. Let her skip breakfast, wolf down squashed sandwiches at the gate, and let her pony share every bite.

Let the kids at school call her “horse girl” like it’s something to mock, and let her smile, because she knows what it really means. Let her miss class for a show, and miss a show because her pony isn’t right. Let her cry when she wins, and cry harder when her horse goes lame. Let her know that sound legs and kind hands are worth more than any ribbon.

Let her make best friends in muddy lorry parks and rivals in the warm up ring. Let her fall off, climb back on, and fall off again always learning, always softening, always listening to the horse beneath her. Let her be the one they put on the sharp ponies and the quirky ones, the ones no one else wants to ride, and let her treat them all with patience and respect. Let her muck out a hundred stables and check every pair of eyes before she leaves. Let her learn that welfare is not a word, but a responsibility.

And when the going gets rough, don’t worry. Horse girls grow into horsewomen and horsewomen don’t give up on their horses, or on what’s right.
