Beautiful morning frosts on the winter chard and kale. Fun fact: we deliberately let them feel frost as often as possible early in the fall to help them acclimate to the coming winter. Today’s list has a lot of preparations to cover and protect things from the coming cold that wood be just a little too much for them to experience naked. These first real freezes involve a lot of calculated protection and risk of just how cold to let everything get, how much effort to expend and where. Eventually this planting will get a “caterpillar” tunnel moved over it to last deep in to winter but for this week, just big hoops and row cover.

But the to do list also includes plenty of market prep! We’ll be there tomorrow with lots of goodies and the farmstore is full as well.

Salad greens go in and on! Long-time Bitterrooters may remember when Apple Day was the final market of the season, but here’s your reminder that these days the Hamilton Farmers Market goes all the way through the very last Saturday of October. That’s FOUR more weeks! We will be there with lots of good stuff, and the farmstore is chock full of veggies as well. Hope to see you out there.

Wednesday morning farmstore update: sweet and hot peppers, still a few tomatoes, all the salad greens and spinach, head lettuce, chard and kale, carrots, beets, cabbage, celery, potatoes, radishes, turnips, onions, garlic, broccoli, cauliflower, eggs! And more. Currently offering $1.00 off of a dozen eggs if you bring in ten or more used eggs cartons (clean ones please), as we have worked through our entire stockpile of cartons to recycle! The team is washing bulk carrots as we continue to stow away food for the winter farmstore and winter memberships.

We are loaded at market! Tomatoes, onions, so much broccoli and cauliflower, last of the eggplant, first of the spinach, more of the salad greens (lettuce, arugula, spicy mix, spring mix), head lettuce, leeks, beets, carrots, turnips, radishes, and much more. Spinach is back! In our early years we had a goal to grow spinach all summer (because everyone wants it all the time) and we experimented with shade cloth, extra watering, different varieties…..and eventually we decided that even though we *could* grow it sort of sometimes, the fact is, spinach is happiest and tastiest in the cool season. We don’t grow tomatoes in winter, and we don’t grow spinach in the summer but right now they are in the glorious overlap with plenty of both! Stop by the farmstore or market for spinach, salads, arugula, broccoli, cauliflower, beets, carrots, radishes, turnips, onions, garlic, leeks, tomatoes, cucumbers, sweet and hot peppers, and plenty more.

Tuesday morning farmstore update: tomatoes! Bulk flats of both a-grade and imperfects are weighed and ready, plus loads of singles pints and quarts, including delicious cherry tomatoes. We also have salad, arugula, spicy mix. Beets, carrots, salad turnips, radishes, onions, garlic, cabbages, cucumbers, zucchini, sweet and hot peppers, shiahitos, leeks, celery, beans, cauliflower, and broccoli. Plus melons!

Big Dipper over the hen barns, from last night’s big move between pastures. “Hens moved to fresh pasture regularly” may look fairly simple in the label on our egg cartons, but sometimes it feels like a crazy amount of work. These mobile hen barns on wheels are great, but when the next fresh pasture is a trek across the farm and they have to move at night when the girls are all roosted up inside, it can mean 9-11:30 pm shift for a couple of farmers, followed up the next morning by getting all of their water, feed, electrones, etc., set up and checked. But now they are happy on brand new grassy ground today and set up well for the next several moves. And of course the farm store is loaded with eggs as well as all the late summer veggies.
