In 1966 a group of Black farmers around Hamilton, in Harris County, got tired of hauling a load to a buyer who set the price and dared them to argue about it. ๐Ÿšœ

So they quit going one at a time. What started as the Harris County Farmers Cooperative became the West Georgia Farmers Cooperative in 1969. The idea was plain and it was nobody's favor: show up with one man's load of purple hull peas and you take whatever they offer you. Show up with everybody's load and you are the one doing the talking.

They moved collards, turnip greens, okra, sweet potatoes and tomatoes. They sold feeder pigs at the Eastman livestock market, ran produce to the Columbus farmers markets and to a frozen food plant over in Montezuma, and put up their own feed mill and storage building out on Highway 27 outside Hamilton. They joined the Federation of Southern Cooperatives so they would not be standing out there alone. ๐Ÿฅฌ

Fifty years in, they were still at it. That is the part nobody tells you about Black farming in Georgia, that some of it did not get lost. Did your people ever sell through a co-op, or was it always straight to the man at the scale?
