Winter doesn't end a drought, it actually made it WORSE for much of northwest Ohio and the Maumee River watershed. For the first time in drought monitor history, there is EXTREME drought for much of the region at the start of Meteorological Spring. That's never happened since the drought monitor started in 2000.

Data shows the amount of precipitation need in the next 90 days to eliminate the drought in northwest Ohio would be over 16"! The statistical chance of that happening is 0.32%.

Total winter (Dec, Jan & Feb) precipitation for Toledo was 3.64" which was -3.57" below average and the driest winter since 1962. Of this moisture, there was over 28" of snow, but nearly all of this was very low liquid equivalent with much of this evaporating or lost to the atmosphere not into the ground. Findlay reported the 2nd driest winter on record with only 1.72" over the three winter months. That's -4.17" below average.

Meteorological spring is here, typically a wet season facing a monumental drought that will more than likely persist in some form through the entire spring season.

Fun time to be a farmer…

EXTREME DROUGHT: Northwest Ohio has plunged into the worst drought for the Maumee River watershed since the drought of 1988! 😳

This map below shows parts of at least 8 counties in northwest Ohio that make up the center of the Maumee River watershed are in the bullseye for extreme drought.

The ground it parched. Rivers are down to a trickle. Everything’s turning brown. We need rain. Latest data suggest it would take 6” of rain over the next 30 days to eliminate the drought.💦🌧️☔️
