Transplant day is done! 🌲

We just finished transplanting our Fraser fir stock. These little trees have spent the last two years in a seed bed, and now they’ve got some breathing room — we spaced them out so they can grow for another two years before they get dug up and moved to their final spot to become Christmas trees.

Growing real trees takes time - about 10 years for a Christmas tree.

It’s slow work, but good work. 🎄

🍂 Fall is our favorite season for a reason! 🍂

While some folks are thinking pumpkin spice and football, we're out in the fields doing what we do best — transplanting seedlings! Our drone caught all the action from above, and let us tell you, the view never gets old.

When trees go in the ground in the fall, they spend the cooler months quietly building strong root systems. Then when spring rolls around? They're ready to take off with faster, healthier new growth.

Nature knows what it's doing, and so do we.

Watch the video to see our fall transplanting operation from a whole new angle!

A Little Critter in the Nursery: The Praying Mantis 🦗

While we were out weeding the nursery beds here at Hensler Nursery, we had a delightful encounter with one of nature’s most fascinating critters: a praying mantis! These incredible insects are not only fun to spot but also play an important role in the ecosystem.

Did you know? Praying mantises don’t damage plants, feed on crops, or pose any threat to humans or pets. Instead, they are beneficial predators, helping control pest populations by feeding on other insects. In fact, having a praying mantis in your garden or nursery beds is like having a tiny, natural pest control expert around!

Beyond their practical role, many cultures view the praying mantis as a symbol of good luck, fortune, and spiritual peace. There’s something calming about their slow, deliberate movements and their prayer-like posture. Some even say spotting one is a sign to slow down and enjoy the present moment.

So, next time you’re out in your garden or visiting the nursery, keep an eye out for these little critters. They’re not only fascinating to watch but are also a gentle reminder of the harmony and balance in nature. 🌱✨

Have you ever spotted a praying mantis in your own garden? Let us know in the comments! We'd love to hear your stories.

🌧️🌬️ Crazy Weather in Northwest Indiana! 🌳⚡

What a wild week it’s been here in Northwest Indiana. The weather really threw everything at us — heavy rain, strong winds, and even a few power outages. Despite the chaos, we’re happy to report that Hensler Nursery is standing strong!

We did lose a few trees and some branches, but thankfully, the damage was minimal, and our power was only out for a few hours. Mother Nature may have tested us, but we’re here, ready to keep growing and thriving for our community. 🌱

Take a look at the photos below to see one of the trees we lost. It’s always tough to say goodbye to these beauties, but we’ll be planting and nurturing new life soon.

How did the storms treat you this week? We hope you’re all safe and weathering the storm as well as possible. Let us know in the comments! 🌦️

🌳 Happy National Arbor Day! 🌳

Today, we celebrate the beauty and importance of trees in our lives. Arbor Day is a time to plant, nurture, and appreciate trees. Trees provide countless benefits: they clean our air and water, reduce energy costs by offering shade, prevent soil erosion, and create habitats for wildlife.

Looking for a meaningful family tradition? Start planting a tree together every Arbor Day. One tree can grow into a forest, and your efforts today will leave a lasting legacy for generations to come.

We’re doing the same and are busy planning and planting more seedlings to grow into tall, beautiful trees!

🌱 Let’s make the world greener, one tree at a time. Share your Arbor Day tree-planting photos with us in the comments below!

Planting the Future: 80,000 Christmas Trees in the Making! 🌲

We’re thrilled to share that this spring marks another step forward in our journey of growing a larger stock of beautiful Christmas trees. This season, we’re planting a mix of Fraser fir, white pine, and concolor fir on a 90-acre parcel of land just east of our main entrance.

This field has been part of our vision since we began planting here in 2024, and the first trees from this parcel will be ready for you to choose and cut by 2031-2032. Once ALL planting is complete in 2028, this field will hold over 80,000 Christmas trees, creating a magical space for future holiday memories.

We’re also continuing to use an all-natural, non-toxic product that acts like sunscreen for our trees. It’s been part of our process for the past four years, helping ensure our trees thrive under the sun.

We’re so excited about what the future holds and can’t wait to share it with you.
