Yesterday, the Illinois Department of Agriculture announced that the Local Food Purchase Assistance Program (LFPA) will no longer operate in Illinois due to the new federal administration's decision to stop funding the program. Rooted For Good (RFG) was chosen as a Lead Agency for this program last year and was awarded over 1.5 million dollars. To date, RFG has spent over 1.1 million dollars of the awarded grant.
The LFPA program supported local farmers by purchasing their fresh produce, protein, and dairy at fair market value. RFG worked with 15 local farmers to purchase and distribute over 320,000 pounds of food to 23 organizations, including DeKalb County food pantries, social service agencies, and two Kane County food pantries. Through this program, these organizations served over 13,000 households experiencing food insecurity each month.
At Rooted For Good, we remain committed to our mission and will continue seeking opportunities to support both our local food system and those in need. Everyone deserves access to fresh, nutritious food, and we will keep working toward that goal.
