It’s cow appreciation day so let’s appreciate the Bum Broke fold. For cows/heifers we have Reba, Jolene, Poppy, and Jolene’s calf Rosie. Our bull Carl, steer Bullet, and Reba’s calf Waffle.

Here’s some fun facts about Highlands

* Highland cattle are one of the oldest registered cattle breeds in the world, originating in the Scottish Highlands over 1,000 years ago.

* Their long, shaggy coat actually has two layers: a soft, insulating undercoat and a long, oily outer coat that keeps rain and snow off.

* Because of their thick coat, they can handle freezing temperatures with ease—and often prefer cold weather over hot summers!

* Those famous long bangs (called a dossan) help protect their eyes from rain, wind, and pesky insects.

* Both bulls and cows grow horns. They use them to forage through snow for grass and to defend themselves.

* Despite their impressive horns, Highlands are known for their gentle, calm, and friendly personalities.

* Their meat is naturally lean because they stay warm with their coat instead of storing extra body fat.

* They’re excellent grazers and help maintain pastures by eating a wide variety of grasses and plants.

* Highland calves are usually born weighing only 45–75 pounds, making calving easier than with many other beef breeds.

* Highland cattle come in several beautiful colors, including red, black, dun, brindle, yellow, silver, and white.

* They often live 15–20 years, and some have lived even longer.

* They’re one of the most photographed cattle breeds in the world—those fluffy faces make them hard to resist!
