This can happen with alpacas. It’s Refered to as berserk male syndrome. Those cute videos of people “playing” with alpacas can lead to this. A very interesting and well explained article.

Millions of years ago, some unknown common ancestor of today’s llamas, camels, and alpacas underwent an unusual genetic mutation. This evolutionary happenstance gave llamas and their kin a strange type of antibody that no other mammals have—which, surprisingly, could end up aiding in the fight against Covid-19. On Monday, in the journal Nature Structural & Molecular Biology, researchers from the Rosalind Franklin Institute and the University of Oxford reported the discovery of two llama antibodies, also called nanobodies, that could prevent the virus that causes Covid-19 from infecting human cells.

Seeing this “memory” post has made me confirm that I am a liar!
I have fought and fought and I hate to admit it but I quit! It has taken such a toll on me mentally and physically. I am broken, NO, not broken, I’m shattered. For over 12 years my life has been my Alpacas. After the death of my son, they gave me a purpose. My reason to “rise and shine”. The good, the bad, the health and sickness. The live births and still borns. The tough decision to euthanize, regardless how much it hurt me.
Time for a major change. Not sure how to carry on from this point. I’ll do my best to find them good homes. If you are Intrested, please message me.
With much love and respect.
Shattered Anita.

Some very important information about alpacas. If you are considering getting them, please keep this information in mind.

New record: Largest parade of alpacas. 1,048 alpacas recently took to the streets of Juliaca in Puno, Peru for a parade organised by Comite FEGASUR 2019.⁣

The Feria de Ganadería y Agricultura del Sur - FEGASUR (Southern Cattle Fair) celebrated its 58th anniversary with the thirteen provinces of Puno participating in the parade.⁣

The two species of alpacas participating were Huacaya (with fur that could be described spongy in appearance) and Suri (curly long hair).⁣

To all my Facebook friends.... I will not be posting much over the next few weeks. I am beginning the fight for my farm, animals and home here in Fallbrook. I have been given 20 days to clear up this issue with code enforcement. Get the ordinance changed or get down to 5 animals. Plus dealing with a neighbor who has managed to flood us out last winter. Plus a neighbor who feels that my lights are too bright🙄. They have not seen a bright light until this is all resolved.
I’m asking for nothing more than positive thoughts and prayers.
I do not plan on giving up my animals. I will not put that out into the universe as a possibility.
I have a new friend going thru pretty much the same situation. If you have information, ideas or recommendations.....feel free to comment and advise. Be nice and kind.
Hugs to all🦙🦙🦙🦙🐴🐶🦄🐷🐣🔥🔥🔥

Alpacas Are Totally Not Llamas

A great read about alpacas.

Alpacas are highly intelligent and they're not pets. They require a lot of research and specialized knowledge if you plan to bring a few home.

STOLEN totally agree.

An open letter to new alpaca owners or potential owners;

Dear Newbie,
We are so excited you’re considering alpacas! We love new people joining us in this adventure! Alpacas are beautiful, sweet, curious, and unique! Due to their uniqueness sometimes we may suggest som**hing that will improve your alpaca ownership experience. Please don’t consider us rude. Our goal isn’t to discourage you, but to prevent discouragement in the future.

When we tell you that alpacas are herd animals and require other alpacas we aren’t trying to make you buy from us. We have seen a lonely alpaca light up like a Christmas tree when introduced to other alpacas. We have watched the herd dynamics and realize that these animals require like companionship.

When we tell you that alpacas don’t make good bottle babies or indoor pets it’s not because we don’t think they are adorable. It’s because we’ve watched an overhanded alpaca go berserk and be put down due to mishandling.

When we tell you that alpacas are more difficult to keep with other livestock it’s not because we enjoy watching you put in more pastures. It’s because we don’t want you to witness an alpaca that was fine months ago suddenly go down due to parasites after put in with goats.

When we tell you alpacas need to be shorn yearly it’s not because we like watching you find a shearer. It’s because we’ve watched an animal convulse from heat exhaustion and fight for their lives.

When we say that you can’t mix male and female alpacas it’s not because we don’t want you having crias. It’s because we don’t want you to have to deal with the infertility, stress, and infection that comes from overbreeding.

Dean Newbie, when we offer info it’s because we love these animals and want you to have a good experience. Please consider what we say, learn from our trial and error, and don’t brush us off.

Thank you!
Sincerely,
A 10+ year alpaca owner
