Little Creek Farms A few years ago, we were inspired to begin gardening. In the process, we fell in love with the bees.

Spring is here and our bees are in full swing!

We’ve actually been so busy between splitting our colonies and fulfilling orders that this picture of a supercedure cell is the first I’ve taken all spring!

Happy 2024 bee season all! 🐝

This was a rather large swarm we caught in mid May. Admittedly, they were in the swarm trap too long, so… they swarmed! The many capped swarm cells and abundance of drone brood was a pretty good indicator. And then there’s the absence of a queen and significant drop in numbers, of course. They’re now transferred to a hive and hopefully they bounce back quickly!

What to do when you have bees prone to swarming?

One of the swarms we caught last year at the end of June has become one of our strongest colonies One thing we weren’t anticipating was their propensity for swarming!

The primary swarm happened April 16. It was huge and we didn’t arrive in time to catch them. Then April 27, they cast a secondary swarm (we think? Hard to say for sure) that we did catch.

April 30, they cast 2 more (much smaller) swarms with virgin queens. Considering this was a swarm caught in late June, we’re not sure what to expect over the next 2 months. Hopefully they calm down, but time will tell!

We have nearly full shelves already in the grow room and these are just the pollinator plants! We haven’t even started the vegetable plants yet!

It’s seed starting time!

I was gifted these Wild Lupine (lupinus perennis) seeds. It was my first time attempting scarification (opening the seed’s coating to encourage germination), so I didn’t know what to expect.

After 10 days cold stratifying (exposure to cold temperatures to break seed dormancy), 45 out of 49 germinated!

They’ve been planted in soil and will hopefully continue to grow so they can join the ever expanding pollinator garden! 🐝

We’ve been growing these Little Adder Agastache since October from seed to put in this year’s garden. They are a favorite of the honeybees and they have a strong minty smell! Can’t wait to see how they do!

We have caught 4 swarms this year so far! They are all doing so well and building comb so quickly that it sometimes is hard to keep up, but we are super excited about all of it!

The first picture is of the first swarm/colony after they were transferred to their hive and relocated. The rest of the pictures are from the 4th swarm, which we were lucky enough to be present for (and is also a really interesting story that we are currently working on a video to explain for our YouTube channel).

We have recently listed our 7 frame layens swarm trap for sale and as always, we have layens frames available for sale (both assembled and unassembled) on our website:

We have had a busy week of hardening off the seedlings, planting new fruit trees, and getting the garden prepared for next week’s planting! The blueberries are blooming, the seedlings are nearly ready, and so are we! Let the season begin!

We have so much growing under the lights this year! Can’t wait for May! 🌱
