Things tend to get a little quiet around here during the winter months—and honestly, that’s not a bad thing 🤍
When the sun goes down early, the true farmer (Tyler 😉) comes home at a decent hour and we actually get quality family time. It’s my favorite season for us—being together more, slower evenings, dinner at the table. That said… being indoors longer with three small kids is not for the faint of heart 😅 There are definitely days I’m counting down to summer activities and outdoor freedom.
ANYWHO—February is finally here and we can officially see spring around the corner 🌷
We’re trying something new this year on the flower farm: winter sowing. We’ve studied up and are hoping for the best! If you haven’t heard of winter sowing in clear jugs, here’s the quick rundown:
Winter sowing is a way to start seeds outdoors during the winter using clear containers (like milk or water jugs) as mini greenhouses. We cut the jugs almost in half, add drainage holes, fill them with soil, plant the seeds, and tape them back together. They sit outside during the winter, exposed to the elements, and when temperatures and daylight are just right, the seeds germinate naturally. No grow lights, no hardening off—just nature doing her thing. Once spring rolls in, we’ll transplant the seedlings right into the patches 🌱
This was our Sunday funday activity and it went over surprisingly well with the kids. The kitchen table was used for alllll the things, and boy do I hope their memories are tied to it someday 🥹
We got 15 jugs planted and plan to do just as many more—but first, we have to collect the jugs! Huge thank you to everyone who has donated and helped keep us stocked. We are so grateful 💛
Spring, we’re ready for you (well… almost).
