Summer is not done yet - there's still fishing to do! We asked our fisheries staff for some late-summer tips to get more fish on your line, but we know this doesn't include everything. 🎣😎

If fishing for trout on streams or rivers, consider using flies with grasshopper patterns. If you aim near stream banks with overhanging grass or other vegetation, you'll be targeting the right spots. Something from our Upper Peninsula staff - dry flies (hoppers and Adams) have been successful recently for brook trout.

Inland lakes can be a bit difficult to target when water is warm. As an example, water can become stratified, meaning fish will hang out about 15-20 feet down where the thermocline line is. Basically, where the water goes from colder deep water to warmer surface water. Targeting this depth in areas with aquatic plants is great for largemouth bass, bluegill, black crappie, northern pike and walleye.

For river fishing, look for log jams or deeper pools. These are favorite places for larger fish and can be targeted with spinner baits or fly fishing.

Upper Peninsula fishing can offer some different opportunities. The mouth of UP rivers along the Great Lakes will have salmon beginning to stage near them in the late summer, preparing for their fall run.

As always, if you're looking for panfish you can't go wrong with a good slip bobber and a hook with some bait (worms, etc.)
