On this day in 1971, baseball turned the lights on. 💡⚾
October 13, 1971. Game 4 of the World Series. Pirates vs. Orioles at Three Rivers Stadium in Pittsburgh. For the first time ever, the Fall Classic was played at night.
And it almost went sideways fast. 😬 The Orioles jumped out to a 3–0 lead before the Pirates could get out of the first inning. Then a 21-year-old rookie named Bruce Kison walked in from the bullpen and shut the door: 6⅓ scoreless innings, just one hit allowed.
In the 7th, another rookie, backup catcher Milt May, stepped up to pinch-hit and drove in the go-ahead run. Pirates win, 4–3. Series tied. 🏴☠
Over 51,000 fans packed the stadium that night, the biggest baseball crowd Pittsburgh had ever seen, and roughly 60 million more watched from home. Pittsburgh went on to win the whole thing, and nearly every World Series game since has been played under the lights.
Pennsylvania made history that night. Come make some of your own under our lights. 🍻🐐
