The Rocky Hollow Buffalo Company is located on the historic Monkey Ranch eleven miles north of Kimball in the western panhandle of Nebraska. The Rocky Hollow Buffalo Company owned by Rick and Lindsay Forepaugh (RHBC) is pleased to announce the sale of the RHBC herd to Dave and Liz Schroth of Strategy Bison located in Alliance, Ne.

RHBC purchased the herd in 2015 from its founder, Vance Forepaugh, owner of the Medicine Wheel Ranch in Elbert, Co.

It’s an exciting new chapter for this genetically proven herd. The only herd in the country to have been awarded Grand Champion with a “Pen of Five Heifers” at the 2017 National Bison Association’s Gold Trophy Show and Sale.

At load out- Average calf weight: 424lbs. Heaviest heifer calf: 560lbs. Heaviest bull calf: 605lbs. Average cow: 1,343lbs.
Heaviest cow: 1,575lbs.

After the herd had been safely unloaded at their new home I asked Dave and Liz if they could share their thoughts.

“We recently had the opportunity to purchase the Rocky Hollow Buffalo Company herd in its entirety. God has graciously blessed us with the opportunity to pick up more land which in turn meant we could grow our bison herd numbers. We’re excited about taking over the genetics and even more excited that the demeanor of the cows match our existing cow herd. Rick and Lindsay have poured their heart and soul into these animals and we expect to do the same. It may be the end of the chapter, but it’s far from the end of the book. We have 5 young kids. They are why we work day in and day out to build a legacy to pass down and now the Rocky Hollow herd gets to be a part of it. We look forward to picking up where Rick and Lindsay left off and continuing on for generations to come.”

The herd is conditioned to all the side by sides on the ranch. This side by side was converted into an all terrain feeder. Today the herd was out of sight, a couple of thousand yards away, on the other side of a hill. It doesn’t matter where they are in the pasture as long as they can hear me they will find me.

The busiest weekend of the year on the ranch is this Saturday. We did some early morning welding, while the herd was locked out, and finished the maintenance and repairs needed in the corals and handling facilities.

We loaded out five, high quality herd bulls this morning. They are on their way to their new home in northwestern Nebraska. After spending nearly everyday of the past few years with these guys, it’s a little bittersweet seeing them depart the ranch. But, I do know they are going to some fantastic bison people and they will be well cared for. And that’s great because I just want the best for my big guys. Goodbye Fred, Picante, Mistake, The Colonel and CC761. Roam like bosses at your new home.

After pulling the herd bulls from the herd we noticed bull #761 has some drainage from his right eye. Probably pink eye and if left unattended it could lead to permanent eye damage. The remedy is an antibiotic administered by a 14 gauge, gel-collared pneumatic dart. He’ll be feeling and looking better in just a few days.
