And flushing season has officially begun!
During flushing season we change a few things.. We feed out a grain mix (cracked corn, molasses covered oats, beet pulp, BOSS, and 18% dairy feed), ACV in their water, free choice mineral buffet, and *almost* free choice alfalfa and Bermuda hay.

Our does (and bucks!) are getting prepared for next month where hopefully most of our planned breedings will be taking place.
Our juniors will be bred later this year (in Dec) if they hit their weights and grow well.

Looking forward to next years kidding season!

Introducing our newest arrival all the way from Texas, MerryTale Peanuts ByThe Barrel B*! (Yes it was a long but worth it road trip😉)

Colton, who is nicknamed after a local restaurant in our neck of the woods that are big on peanuts, "Colton's Steakhouse", is a really promising young buck with a bright future ahead of him!

Before we had even got into Nubians earlier this year, this particular breeding had caught my eye when this young buck was pictured at just a couple days/weeks old. I took one look at him, and the incredible genetics behind him and quickly said, "Yes, if we ever get into raising Nubians that's exactly the kind of buck id want to build our herd around.

Fast forward several long months and Someone opened up some doors - and this young buck is now sitting in our paddocks as happy as can be.

Colton is just about the sweetest buck ive ever met. He's got the best manners, a truly gentle boy (compared to our other ALWAYS starving bottle bucks 🙄 lol). He's long, strong, level, and dairy. This boy absolutely shines in the front assembly something he got from his dam no doubt. Pictures dont do him justice, especially because he refused to sit still and really stand correctly as he wanted a bottle 😅. His brisket is probably the one of the best in our buck pen. Both his dam and sire need only one leg to both be finished champions!

He will be bred to all our Nubians (currently just one 🤫..) but also to our Experimental's as i think he'd complement their lines pretty well!
So yes, im super excited to have this boy here and am looking forward to seeing his first crop of kids Lord-willing next spring! And maybe just maybe get this boy in a couple show rings..

Andy is a really sweet boy, well mannered and easy to handle. He;s got tons of milk behind him - and if he'd been able to be registered we'd definitely use him to cover a couple of does.

His dam's side is what we call our "Little House" lines. They are very dairy and know how to put milk in the pail. His sire's side is one of my favorites as we have noticed is adding more length, width, and strength to our Alpine herd. This is the only buck Monty (his sire) produced before we unexpectedly lost him earlier this year. We need to make room in our buck pen so this boy needs to go asap!

Today was... interesting 😅.

Being pulled every which way here at the farm while in the middle of making a batch of soap doesn't go very well. Made a cold process batch of Cucumber Mint soap - and boy did it smell incredible. After i had poured the soap into molds and insulated it to go through the gel phase, i ran off to go help an emergency prolapsing ewe. After i got her cleaned up/taken care of and gave her a quick homemade harness, I went back to check on the soap and get a quick oil inventory list.

That's when i saw the castor oil. Sitting on the shelf 100% untouched - 100% still brand new... I had somehow managed to COMPLETELY forget adding it to the soap. Which unless i did something would be a total waste as that batch was now lye heavy.

So after some research I discovered the batch was still salvageable if I re-batched it into hot process soap and added the remaining oil.

I've never done hot process soap before, i much prefer cold process, so up until today i really did no research on it. So meanwhile the soap was "cooking" i was looking up videos, pictures, and info on that process. So yes, i kinda just winged it 😅.

We'll see how it turns out - hoping for the best !!

And the last one on our "to introduce" list, meet Grand Design Milleau!

Millie is just the sweetest doe, always at your heels. Before i go on ill have to ask you to please excuse her "posing". She was barely getting used to our place when we got these and was on high alert because of our livestock guardians 😅.

She's level, wide, capacious, and easily puts milk in the pail without needing fancy supplements to do so (on mere pasture she was easily milking 5 lbs a day as a 2F). My least favorite thing would probably be her slightly blown teat on her left side, but other than that, shes a really neat gal!

Shes the first Nubian doe here, though not the first one we've owned. I had the pleasure of raising a Nubian some 5-6 years ago. And i can say there is nothing like the Nubian personality 😂.

Cant wait to see where this pretty girl takes us in her career.

This doe is so incredible, and as a 2YR FF that's saying alot!
For a young doe, and an FF at that, she has an amazing maturity to her, a gentle presence about her, an incredible width, and my favorite part, her DAIRY skin! Talk about a dairy goat!! Her udder is very capacious, she sure know how to put milk into the pail. And that soft pliable udder that milks down to nothing in mere seconds!

She quickly moved up to my favorite milker - and that's saying a lot already ;) .

I could go on but ill stop there..

Marlee will be tentatively bred to our own junior buck, Old Paths Reality Double Take for a really nice line breeding on GCH (pend.) Maple Wind Cabaret 5*M (they both have her as their grandam!), and not to mention others such as SGCH Angel-Prairie Jack Fantome 4*M, ++*B SGCH Marran Rose's Rochester, and several others! Currently working on Double Take's papers otherwise id spare yall the details and just give you a planned pedigree 😅.

Anyways.. Im so grateful to have this incredible young doe and cant wait to prove her out! Thank you once again to the Maple Wind Caprines herd for trusting us with these two girls (and many others!).

Truth is, nothing on the farm is "real quick".

What was supposed to be a quick easy job ended up taking most of our afternoon. It all started with the 3 point hitch on our tractor. It suddenly refused to come down so that we could load up the bush hog. So after some "google university" we were told that there were 3 steps to get it all fixed up.

#1. An extremely easy fix. Loosen the valve that controls how much hydraulic oil flows into the lift cylinders to control how fast the hitch drops. - It didnt work.
#2. A pretty easy fix. Take apart rate-of-drop control valve and spray with WD-40 to make sure it spins properly in case of rust. - It didnt work either.
#3. The most labor intensive fix (of course). Take off the tractor seat that hasnt come off in probably close to a decade (ok maybe thats exaggerating a little 🙃). Remove the metal cover that is rusted shut. Get a small Allen wrench into small tight places that are meant for incredibly small hands (or maybe fancy tools??) and loosen tight bolts - the list goes on..

Anyways, after a much longer time than expected, we finally got the 3 way hitch to lower but basically only when it wants to lol. Before we could really figure out what was going on, heavy storm clouds rolled in, thunder n wind came in full force, and them goats started hollering at me for being 5 minutes late to milking.. So tools were put away and evening chores had begun to beat the oncoming storm (that by the way was all bark and no bite 😒)

This was a good reminder of Matthew 6:34. "Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own."
Especially with farm life, that verse is very relatable, its true. So take a minute to breathe and remember Who's in control - you've got this!

Introducing our newest addition, Maple Wind Legacy Promise - 2YR 2F!

To say that I was merely surprised that the Maple Wind herd offered her to us is an understatement 😅! Promise is such a sweet and extremely productive doe. Her lines are not completely new to us as we not only have her daughter from last year, Maple Wind Hot Legacy, but also had Promise's maternal brother, Maple Wind Maverick Montage who we unfortunately lost earlier this year (BPW) before i could fully use him in our small herd as had planned.

Promise herself is a wide dairy doe. Love the length, width, angulation, and productiveness on this doe! And of course her milk stand manners lol.. Thank you so much Maple Wind Caprines for trusting us with this doe - she is a truly amazing doe!

The past week and a half have been so incredibly busy - but also very rewarding! We have some exciting news to share soon!

Hoping things slow down a bit so we can catch our breaths before the busyness/craziness of flushing/breeding season for our dairy goats and Dorper sheep😵‍💫😂
