At Spotswood Elementary School, where I work, we are starting a fundraiser to send material aid to Central America. Many of our students have aunts, uncles, brothers, sisters, grandparents, cousins and even parents in Honduras, El Salvador, Guatemala and Nicaragua. Many of these family members are suffering the loss of everything they had due to the unprecedented disaster caused by Hurricanes Eta and Iota. The situation of their families and friends is at the forefront of our students and families minds and lives.
Some of our Honduran parents came to the school and asked if we could collect materials to help aid in disaster relief. We have created an impromptu disaster relief committee and because of Covid-19 plan to start raising funds virtually for now, as this does not spread disease. These funds will be used to buy all the materials needed for our in person students to put together Disaster Relief Kit in January. As we begin the new year, we also plan to focus our daily class meetings around the theme of "social awareness" which will include many lessons about empathy and the importance of helping others in need. We also hope to create the opportunity for children who read and write in Spanish to pen pal with children in Honduras and Nicaragua who have been affected by this disaster and learn about how this has effected their lives. Please add your grain of sand, click on this link t.ly/BNuL to help our school teach Harrisonburg's children about the power and importance of empathy! As Dr. King stated, “We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly.”
