One of our regular customers asked the fatal question "What (chicken layer) feed do you guys use?"
Lol, here you go.
'We use MFA 16% layer feed as a base.
I add 5 scoops of Kalmbach 22% "Start to Finish Meat Bird" to boost protein.
My "scoop" size is 4 cups.
Then I add some vegetable oil to provide extra fat from the base of 3% up to around 7%, then ¾ scoop of pork meat and bone meal (extra calcium, animal fat, and animal based amino acids), ½ scoop flax seed meal (raises the Omega 3 fatty acid), a ⅓ scoop of granite grit (digestion and feed efficiency) , a half scoop of ground oyster shell (calcium), and a ¼ cup of crushed red pepper flakes and ⅛ cup of oregano and a good tablespoon of Cayenne pepper.
The last 3 ingredients boost yoke richness as well as boost immunity & parasite control.
I use a small cement mixer to combine them.
Chickens don't stop laying strictly because of age, they run out of the ingredients to make eggs that they build up in the 20 weeks of life before the start laying.
This feed helps maintain those mineral , fat, and protein reserves a little longer and makes a more healthy flock over all.
My young birds get the same feed additives (minus the scoop of oyster shell, that's a bit too much calcium before they start to lay); their feed is based on the Kalmbach 22% "Start to Finish Meat Bird".
Once they start laying, I switch to my layer mix.
Lol, I geek out on poultry feed. Probably more than you were expecting learn; but it gives us strong, tall, rich yokes; good shells, and gives our birds the extra minerals to extend their useful lives by a year or two.'
Anything worth doing is worth over doing.
The pic below is our young birds. They are about 6 weeks old as of last Friday.
