Windy Ridge Acres, LLC - Mitchell Farmstead The farmstead was established in December of 2020 and has slowly grown yearly. It all started with a small flock of 6 backyard chickens. In the city.

We specialize in handmade goat milk soap, pasture-raised eggs, baked goods, and some seasonal produce. Nate and Amanda married in 2008, started a small family, frequented the farmers market and became enthralled with chickens. A few years later they decided the kids were old enough to 'help' raise some chicks and the rest is history. Backyard chickens were the perfect gateway animal to wanting more land, more chickens, and more animals! They sold their Lexington home, moved two counties over to Lawrenceburg and grew their flock. Amanda started a garden and planted a few fruit trees. Then they added goats to help with the overgrown brush in the pastures. Then Amanda started milking the goats and making goat milk soap. That's how their little farmstead started. Follow them on their journey to see what other adventures, animals, and plants they decide to add to their farmstead.

Long post, but here's why my weekly email hasn't been sent out and why I won't have deliveries this week...

Hey y'all!

Sorry I didn't send an email last week and this week, it wasn't because I didn't try, trust me! For some reason, my email was not saving drafts or sending emails. There are no deliveries this week because Thursday is busy. On Thursday, I have my trial run of producing lotion! I'm so excited to finally add this to our products! I've made the lotion for a few years for personal use, but in order to legally sell it, the lotion must be made in a commercial kitchen. I have to schedule, rent, and take all my ingredients to another location. Thursday is my trial run making the lotions in a 'new' kitchen. I'll get used to all the supplies offered, where to find said supplies, and keep track of the time needed for production. At a later date, I will schedule with an inspector who will watch the entire process in order to approve production for sales. Lotions are considered a cosmetic, so there's more 'red tape' involved in order to sell it. I'm also finalizing liability insurance for the new product. If all goes well, lotions will be available just in time for the holidays! Lotions are perfect for gifts, and not to mention for yourself when the dry winter air wreaks havoc on our skin.

I also have to find time to stop by the 198 Market (Lawrenceburg) to finalize my set up. Ribbon cutting and grand opening day is Monday, Oct. 19!! Follow their page for more details and store hours.

There's a lot going on with the soaps, lotions, and personal life, but I wouldn't trade it!

I rendered beef suet into tallow for soaps. The leftover bits of fat and meat from rendering don’t get thrown away. That left over suet is FOOD for the wild birds during the winter. Woodpeckers especially love the suet! The left over suet is frozen until the winter, then I’ll put it out for the birds. If I set it out now, it would just melt into a mess.

I’m testing new recipes to find a *better* liquid soap! Liquid soap starts with combining fats (oils), liquids (water and goat milk), and KHO lye (potassium hydroxide- different from bar soap). The ingredients cook in the crockpot until forming a paste. The paste is diluted with distilled water to make a foaming liquid soap.

This time comes with all livestock owners. The decision to keep replacement breeders, sell, or butcher. These guys were an easy sell to a cattle farm. They’ll mow down the honeysuckle and other w**ds; with the goal of saving time in w**d management and using less herbicides.
