"Combining instruction in proper, balanced riding and on the ground, hands-on eduation to create a solid, strong equestrian." I believe that every rider should have strong fundamentals, I structure my lessons with dressage principles in mind; it is from this foundation that riders are able to advance in the art of riding. My lessons offer a variety of activities to keep the lessons fun and engagi

ng while horse and rider develop as a cohesive team. I have worked with many children in teaching horsemanship and provide a positive, inviting approach to learn and grow. My personal experience with horses began 40 years ago when I began huntseat lessons as a child, as a youth I expanded to riding and showing saddleseat and western pleasure. I have taught lessons, including therapeutic lessons for those with special needs, for over 20 years and have trained my own personal horses as well as client’s horses.

This boy continues to impress! He has a good brain and catches on quickly. He’s sensitive, which I want and appreciate. We continue to work on building a solid foundation and each week I add something new. This week I added hand walking on the trail and proprioception work. He did very well with both! The first time I introduced straddling a pole he was able to with both his front and hinds. For those familiar with proprioception work know that’s not an easy task!

He needs to build his top line before I even consider backing him. Considering the whole horse and when it’s appropriate to restart is something I take pretty seriously as I want my horses to be ready physically and mentally and to last the long haul. The horse is always first.

I’m not sure people I already know are even ready for THAT… 🐴🤪😂

Official restart on this handsome guy has commenced! For those that don’t know, Zander is a 4 year old OTTB that retired due to a tendon injury early in 2025. I adopted him from New Vocations and he arrived last December in 8 degrees at 3:00am (he was in sunny, warm FL). He adapted to our cold WI winter much better than I expected (I was so worried!).

Although he has been sound since August, my vet and I felt most comfortable giving him more time to heal and acclimate. He has enjoyed his downtime playing (umm, pestering) his friends. He has been very clear that he wants and needs something to stimulate his mind…think Border Collie stuck in an apartment, lol. So we have officially begun groundwork.

He learned to lunge with ease and today was the first time he had a saddle on (well, other than his racing saddle). To be honest, I wasn’t sure what he’d think of it, but he didn’t give it a second thought. Good boy!

In the next coming weeks, we work on proprioception, reaching over his top line and engaging his core. At this point I don’t have a date of when I will get on him, I’m in no rush and am working on his time line. He lets me know and I listen…it’s been this way since he arrived. Besides I’m in my mid-50’s and ache on the daily! 😅.

Video snippet in comments. Doesn’t he look so proud of himself
in the picture he’s facing me?! Love this guy so much!

This guy…always needs to be in my business, lol. He is the epitome of an “in your pocket gelding. “ I was grooming grandma Misty out in the paddock and he insisted on invading our personal space. Misty is the oldest horse here at 27 and Zander is the youngest at 4. He’s an active, on-the-go, mover and shaker. Misty is not. Yet they like each other…after Misty gave him a lesson in manners and he found a new respect for his elder. 🙃
