A few words about marketing gimmicks:
Chickens are not vegetarians by nature. If you buy eggs or chickens that are supposedly fed a vegetarian diet, you can be sure that
a. this is NOT a natural diet for a chicken
b. these chickens never go outdoors
Here is the reality: in addition to eating chicken feed or mash, a chicken will eat plants of all kinds, insects of all kinds (mosquitoes, spiders, ants, moths, flies etc) every kind of crawly creature (worms, caterpillars, larvae, snakes, etc.), frogs, mice, moles and anything else they can manage to chase down. This makes them omnivores. I feed my chickens meat scraps when I have them. They also love leftover oatmeal, rice, beans, bread, and yes, eggs. So, before you get caught up in the marketing hype of meat chickens or egg layers that are fed a "vegetarian diet", know that these chickens are not being fed a diet that is healthy and complete and they are certainly not "free range" because they would never go outdoors.
