🌙 Jimsonweed after dark. 🌸

There’s something almost magical about walking around the farm at night and finding a flower like this one.

Jimsonweed (Datura stramonium) opens its big, trumpet-shaped flowers in the evening, and in the darkness they almost glow. It’s actually a beautiful flower—and one that you might not expect to be a problem at all.

But looks can be deceiving.

🌱 Jimsonweed is poisonous to sheep. The entire plant contains toxic compounds, with the seeds being especially dangerous. So whenever we find it growing where the sheep can get to it, we pull it out and remove it from the pasture.

And there’s one part of that job that nobody really talks about…

It smells absolutely awful. 😂

You can have a beautiful summer evening, walk over to a gorgeous flower, reach down and pull it out—and suddenly you’re wondering how something that looks this pretty can smell that bad.

It’s one of those little reminders that comes with raising livestock: not everything growing in a pasture belongs there.

So the next time you see one of these pretty trumpet flowers blooming after sunset, take a closer look—but if you have livestock, especially sheep, don’t let the pretty flower fool you. 🌙🐑

The Castner family raises grass fed lamb and chicken on pasture and also welcomes guests to stay in their historic farmhouse bed & breakfast.

When you visit during Harvest Hop, you’ll get to meet their flock of Katahdin and White Dorper sheep, plus their loyal protector Atwood, a Great Pyrenees livestock guardian dog who keeps a watchful eye over the herd.
You’ll learn all about regenerative agriculture and how rotational grazing keeps animals happy and healthy, which means healthier food on our tables too.
