We have a few new colored egg layers coming along nicely. We gave blue eggs to our broody hen Athena. She is true to her name and an aggressive defender of her chicks. Shes drawn blood from me more than once! But hopefully that means our new layers will be protected and fully integrated into the laying flock.

We have a truly epic (for us) amount of tomatoes for the market tomorrow. We also have a lot of cucumbers, purple beans and long beans, some okra. Peach, blueberry and kiwi jams (blackberry coming soon). As well as our pasture raised eggs and our usual soap (more new batches coming soon).

If you're wondering why egg supplies tend to decrease in the heat this is one reason. Our heritage breeds tend to go broody. This is one of our purebred lavender Americaunas we got last year.

A little switch goes off in their chicken brains and they decide its time to hatch eggs! The get aggressive and want to sit. And when its time to hatch ... they stop laying. Production breeds are less likely to do this but it can still happen.

Got some storm damage to the garden beds and fruit trees. Lost some pears off the tops of the trees and a few of the pepper plants. Tomatoes had branches broken.

The chickens did take full advantage of the fallen pears though ... ;)
