“Maybe nature had it right all along.
Maybe animals were never meant to live crowded indoors.
Chicken p**p alone is one of nature's best forms of fertilizers.
Through our process of rotational grazing and daily movement onto fresh pasture we are actually leaving the planet better than we found it.”
~ Farmer Paul

With so many confusing and misleading labels on packages, pasture-raised is emerging as the best way to ensure optimal health and nutrition, and radical transparency is the best way for you to check those claims.
When animals are pasture-raised it means they are literally raised outdoors and moved daily to fresh pasture.
Here are five reasons why that is better for you:
Pastured cattle that is grass-fed and grass finished, is the only kind of beef containing conjugated linoleic acid which helps prevent weight gain. It has more good fats like omega-3 and less bad fats. It has more antioxidants, including vitamin E. It also has much more vitamin K2 which is vital for getting calcium into your bones and away from your arteries where it causes plaque and heart attacks.
Pasture-raised and forested pigs who also consume acorns have higher levels of omega-3 fats along with micronutrients like vitamin E and iron, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium and zinc.
Pasture raised chicken contains 50% more vitamin A compared to conventionally raised chicken. Vitamin A is important for vision, immune system strength, skin health and cell division and growth.
Turkeys raised on pasture with a diverse diet results in good fat being stored in their muscle meat and higher ratios of protein to fat.

Thinking of offering ‘white’ pasture raised eggs as well. In the past, consumers seemed to prefer the ‘brown’ eggs as it seems to relate more to smaller family locally owned farms rather than large commercial housing farms.
Which do you prefer?

People ask me all the time, ‘why pasture raised’, what difference does it make?
Very simple question, but very complex answer.
We’ll stick with simple for now.
For starters, chicken raised on pasture both live off the land and give back to the land. Allowing chickens to forage gives them access to nutrient dense food in the form of insects, worms, grass, and seeds, which provide a wealth of extra vitamins and minerals to their diet. It has been lab tested and proven that pasture raised chicken has three times the amount of Omega 3’s, 50% higher in vitamins A,D, and E, and lower in saturated fats by 21%!
On the back end, many gardeners are aware of the incredible benefit that chicken manure provides to the soil. It is a great soil amendment that increases the moisture capacity of the dirt and adds beneficial and necessary micro-organisms back to the land. Regenerative Agriculture at its finest.
Simply put, raising animals on pasture is an ‘old school’ farming practice that serves both the animals and the land in equal measure. Allowing chickens to supplement their diet with pasture grazing makes for healthier birds, and healthier land.
Plus, have you ever tasted one? 😋

The hardest thing for most livestock producers to realize is that we are not in the cattle business. We are in the grass business.

We are gearing up for pastured poultry season here on the farm.
Compared to barn-raised chickens, pastured poultry has shown to have three times the Omega-3’s, 50% more Vitamin A,D, and E, and 21% less saturated fat. Not only is it a healthier option, it also tastes better!

NO PESTICIDES. NO HORMONES. NO ANTIBIOTICS. It seems like everyone’s throwing these terms around, but shouldn’t these be a given? The bar has been set too low for our food supply and we’ve decided to do our part to raise it. That’s why our farm uses the latest regenerative growing techniques, putting a strong focus on healing the soil we grow in. It sounds complex but it’s quite simple; Healthy soil = Healthy food.

WAF is striving to become a more diversified livestock farm. In our quest to achieve that, we welcome Khaki Campbell ducks to the herd.
We chose this breed of ducks for their ability to be an excellent forager and consistent egg production.

Berkshire Pork!
Are you looking to fill your freezer for the winter?
We are offering whole hog or half hog shares for our next processing date Nov. 1st.
Whole hog will be 3.25 lb and half hog share will be 3.50 lb. We will have the hogs at the processor Nov 1st.
For those who have never purchased a whole hog, the process is simple.
If purchased, you will pay the farm the per lb charge for hanging weight, then you will discuss with the processor how you would like your hog butchered and processed. You will pay your processing fees directly to the processor and also pick up your product when the processor sets the date.
The whole hog and hog shares are limited, so it is first come first serve.
Below is an example of a typical 250 lb hog.

Why we Pasture-Raise Pork?
Studies show the nutritional value of pork from pastured pigs that consume grass and forage is higher than pork from conventionally-raised pigs.
Better Fat Quality
Increase in Nutrients
Less saturated fat, more heart-healthy polyunsaturated fats.
► Replacing saturated fats with polyunsaturated fats is associated with reduced blood levels of total and LDL cholesterol.
► Studies suggest that replacement reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease, including heart attacks, and related deaths.
Lower ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 polyunsaturated fats
► Omega-6 fats are considered more inflammatory than omega-3 fats.
► Research suggests a lower ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 fats may improve cognitive function and reduce the risk of many chronic diseases, such as cardiovascular disease and cancer.
Higher levels of protein and vitamin E
► Protein is needed to build, maintain, and repair tissue.
► Vitamin E is an antioxidant that protects cells from free radicals.
By the numbers...
Compared to conventionally-raised pork, pasture-raised pork has:
2.4x more omega-3 fats
60% lower omega-6: omega-3 ratio
1.3x higher poly- unsaturated: saturated fats
8% higher protein
2x more vitamin E
