Second cutting orchardgrass is on the ground!! 4 years ago, we plowed this small river bottom field as a trial run before renovating the farm. This season was the first hay crop and as a bonus……. we learned a good second cutting is indeed possible on our flats! I can’t even explain to you all how exciting this is for us! Today was a good day. 😎🌾🤘🏼

In farming, you win some and you lose some. The goal each year is to keep our record above .500. Which some years is much easier said than done.

This season, the biggest challenge was the elk feeding pressure that we experienced in the early spring on the new grass hay fields and later in the annual crops which was particularly heavy.

Our farm is home to hundreds of elk over winter and early spring. Most will move off to the mountains to have their babies and leave our crops alone in the spring.

However, that pattern seems to have changed this winter when several wolf packs moved into the area. The elk hung around the valley longer than usual and larger numbers never left.

And I can’t blame them… go to the mountains and have your babies turned into wolf s**t or hang out down here where at least they have a chance.

Unfortunately, our policy makers and the special interest groups seem to forget one of Newton’s most famous laws: Every action has an equal and opposite reaction. And that reaction can have very real and painful consequences for those caught in the middle. In this case, farms and elk alike. This large male was caught on trail cam March, 31st outside the back door of our neighbor house and only a few hundred yards from our home.
