Hardy Mum Tips: Planting and Pinching

Planting for next year
Hardy mums have the best chance of returning when planted in spring, giving their roots a full season to establish. Fall planting is less reliable and works best at least six weeks before the first expected frost. Choose a sunny spot with well-drained soil, loosen tightly packed roots, and water well after planting. When the ground begins to freeze, add about 4 inches of mulch. Leave the stems standing until spring.

Pinch for more fall flowers
In spring, when new growth is about 4–6 inches tall, pinch or snip off the growing tips. Repeat once or twice as the plant grows, finishing by July 4. Pinching encourages more branches, which can produce more flowers in fall. Stop by early July so the plant has time to set buds.

Fall color is waking up at 5 Oaks! 🍂

The greenhouse is full of mums beginning to bloom in sunny yellow, soft white, pretty pink, and deep burgundy—with plenty more buds on the way. Outside, pumpkins and gourds add orange, green, white, and blue-gray to the mix. 🎃

Come stroll through and pick your favorite colors for a fall display! Which ones would you take home?

🌸 FINAL DAY THIS FRIDAY! 🌸

This Friday, June 12th, is your absolute last chance to shop at 5 Oaks Farm and Greenhouse until this fall! We are closing our doors this Friday at 4:00 PM so we can go see some State Final Softball 🥎 action.

We have great deals on all remaining items. Stop out and grab some beautiful flowers for that empty pot you forgot to fill! Get them before I start to plant my own pots. 🏃‍♂️💨

🌱 NEED FERTILIZER LATER? If you need any Beat Your Neighbor Fertilizer to feed your plants throughout the season after we close, you will need to reach out via phone, email, or messenger to set up a specific pickup time. We will be opening up for the fall 🍁🌻season around Labor Day. Follow us for updates throughout the summer.☀️
