The bee man is putting up swarm traps around our property today! The idea is that when bees swarm, they find a protected, stable environment in one of these traps. Then we are able to retrieve the swarm when conditions are ideal to move them into a permanent hive on ground level.

We’ve been quietly trucking along through the fall and winter but wanted to say that we are still here and still have bees! Kids and family kept us busier than expected last summer and we didn’t get quite the harvests that we had hoped for. We currently have 3 hives thriving though and are looking forward to some busy bees this spring! Swarm season is beginning. If you come across what looks like a ball of bees, let us know and we might be able to relocate them to a hive! Some of our best producing bees have come from swarms. While we don’t have any honey for you now, I can promise the bees have already been working on the warm days and we are hopeful for a few good harvests in 2025. Stay warm, the bees are happily holed up!

Today I dropped off the last jar of honey until we harvest again this spring (hopefully May)!

First, a big thanks to everyone who has purchased honey! It has helped us pay for baseball, soccer, gymnastics and other things that have helped our kids grow and learn.

Second, we could use YOUR help! We lost two hives through the fall and winter. We have two very strong hives currently and have confidence that they will give us a good amount of honey this spring. We have enough hive boxes for around 8 hives. Swarm season is coming up and if you see a swarm of bees on your property and would like them moved, let us know and I might be able to send the bee man out to rescue them! I am putting a photo below of a swarm that we found last spring. We always seem to have an exciting Easter of trying to capture a swarm or two!

Thank you all again! We will have honey available for you before you know it.

Need a last minute stocking stuffer or item for white elephant exchange? A 4oz jar of local honey is perfect! We love this size for gifting to teachers, too! $5 each and of course, I’m happy to porch drop.

I wasn’t sure we would get a second harvest, but our Sunday was slower than we expected, we got into the bees and will end our 2023 harvest season with almost 6 more gallons! It’s lighter in color and more mild in flavor than our last harvest, yet just as tasty. This little guy was all for helping today!

To the kind person who shared flower seeds with us this spring, thank you! The bees have been loving for flowers and so have we.

Quarts and pints are available again if you missed our harvest a bit ago!

We ended up with just under 9 gallons! It’s quite a bit lower than what we had expected/hoped for as we found issues with a couple of the hives when we got into them. Hoping for another harvest in a few months before cooler weather sets in. The quart jars were filled first and the honey in those is darker. The honey changes color based on what pollen is brought in by the bees throughout the year. With this being our first harvest in 7+ months, that super seems to have had a much different pollen than the clover you get in the spring! Different colors will typically give different flavors but I promise that they are all delicious!

Step Five: Run the frames through the centrifuge with the help of the littles. The centrifuge spins the uncapped honey fast enough to spin it out of the comb. It collects at the bottom and there is a spout that drains into a sanitized bucket. From here, we will fill jars from the bucket!
